I think the whole thing of signage and posters showing the player in a Bulls uniform is kinda fucked with the Bulls.

Every free agent knows that no matter what he does, he will never be the most beloved Bull. He'll never have that statue.

Also he isn't following a great man. There have been many good to great player that have played for the Bulls since MJ left. Now he is the potential savior.

Boston and LA don't seem to have that issue.

Carmelo will never be the most beloved anything unless he went to the Wizards or something.

Know your role, Melo. Just try to be an all-time great, not an all-time franchise player.

Exactly! Magic played with Kareem and took the torch before he retired and Bird came along a decade after the Russell teams. Same with Pierce and KG.

We'll never love him more than Jordan but we will love him if he leads the Bulls to a championship or 2.

The out-of-town relatives tourist special. Navy pier, ferris wheel, architecture river tour and then a deep dish pizza at Uno's.

Delicate Rose spent just about as much time in the Melo meeting as he spent on the court the past 3 years. Not even 30 mins.

The United Center really isn't on the same level as MSG. Bringing him there only reinforces the disparity.

Does anyone believe Melo will be swayed by a few signs?

Did we have Benny the Bull meet him at the airport, too?

Thibs needed to run him through some defensive drills to check and see if he wanted him on the team.

Honest answer. Couldn't the Bulls have rented out the whole Signature Room or other boardroom/meeting space with views of the city/lake in the Loop?

I'm 100% certain there will be a Melo Bulls jersey hanging in the stall when they give him a tour of the locker room with a "See, this could be you!"

I think you are seeing this the wrong way. They took him to the UC so he could get the championship visual. Bring him in and allow him to touch the trophies and show him how his addition will allow the Bulls to win even more of trophies. Show him how he could own the city by winning and also elevate the profile of his wife. The Bulls take care of their own after their careers are over. They need to show him what they are offering is unique. That should be a very powerful and convincing pitch. The Knicks can't provide the roster the Bulls have. They haven't won a title since Phil was a player. Their organization isn't loyal to their former players. Knicks fans don't love him.

I would hold the meeting at a place that accentuates the advantages Chicago has over New York rather than the opposite. To do so, I would need to research the kind of lifestyle Melo wants to have. What are his main interests? What does he like to do for fun? Since Melo continually emphasizes the cultural power of NYC in his interviews, I would develop a strategy around showing how Chicago can equal or exceed his hometown in many respects. Naturally, I would also have him talk basketball with Thibs, but this can be done just about anywhere a video monitor is available.

That's where I believe you are wrong. The Bulls can't convince him that Chicago is a better city because he would never believe it regardless of what they showed him. Their primary pitch has to be championships. After they've sold him on that then they can show him how the city is comparable to New York.

Coming from you, the above comment is steeped in irony.

I wasn't striving for originality. Rather, I was merely pointing out the amateurish nature of Paxson's appeal by referencing an earlier free-agent recruiting debacle.

They could just show him a copy of the standings and the current rosters of both teams.

Pitch over.

I doubt Melo gives two shits about the city. If he loved New York City so much, he wouldn't have opted out. He wouldn't be going to see lame as Houston and Dallas.

He is here for one reason: he wants to know how the Bulls plan to win if he comes here. He needs to know exactly how they plan to get the players on the court to beat the Heat and Spurs. That's it.

Show him the Streets of Woodfield and take him to Cooper's Hawk for lunch. Done deal. BOOM!

As I said, you can talk basketball anywhere. What's the point of going to an empty stadium? Showing him Jordan's championship trophies will be meaningless. Everyone knows Jordan was an anomaly and that the team doesn't really have a tradition of winning championships. You can't win the future by emphasizing the past.

And if lifestyle is as important to Melo as many have said it is, you better make sure your argument in this area is very strong.
