Great article from the past....

“We wish he were seven feet, but he isn’t,” said Bulls general manager Rod Thorn.

“He’s a very good offensive player,” said Thorn. “But not an overpowering offensive player.”

Translation: Fans, don’t expect miracles. Jordan, don’t expect a million dollars.

Sam Bowie woulda looked mighty fine in a Bulls uni. As Cher might say, "If I could turn back time..."

Who were the GMs that turned down trade offers from Thorn to move up to 3 pick and grab him?

It is funny. Nobody in the NBA knew he was gonna be the greatest ever. Not even the Bulls GM at the time. Christ, the way his quotes read, he was just hoping he'd be decent.

There is an old 60 minutes interview with Jordan. Like 1986 or 1987.

It cracks me up. Because they go to Jordan's modest apartment and film him folding his Bulls warm up jersey. Think about that? They made the players wash their warm up suits back then. Even the great Michael Jordan.

My brother sent me that this morning. I noticed it was a Lincicome column. Crazy. I miss those columns from the 80's and early 90's.. Can't remember when he went away but I remember being bummed.

FF would wrongly think Rod Thorn is a genius for drafting Jordan. Rod Thorn lucked into Jordan, just like the vast majority of GMs draft stars out of sheer luck and/or being at the right place at the right time.

What was Thorn's per 100 moves?

Lincicome and Bob Verdi we're the best back then (In the Wake of the News column). BTW, Lincicome is back on Sundays every week now. He must be pretty old.

FF would rightly think that Thorn's career speaks for itself

Whenever you feel bad about your current front office in any sport, just relax and realize that the Bulls were disappointed in getting Jordan at 3.

No shit. For all the talk about the current NBA not being competitive, if it wasn't for a gambling suspension the Bulls would have won the title from 91-98.

No, but nobody was saying that when the Bulls were the best team in the game over the last month and Jordan was dropping 55 on the Knicks. This is just part of the assumed "EIGHTpeat" that Bulls fans like to fantasize about. If they lost on the square, you can't claim the EIGHTpeat.

It's no different than the silly assumption that the Sox were the '94 World Series champions.

Hank's right. Your analogy would only work if the Sox won the 91, 92, and 93 World Series as well.

Pfftt... Pippen almost took the 94 team to the finals WITHOUT Jordan. I'm sure they would have been fine if MJ kept playing basketball.

It wouldn't have surprised me if the Sox also won the 95,96, and 97 World Series too.

Um, anyone who knows basketball knows it was basically an 8'peat for the Bulls. Shit they didn't even give the Rocket's real gold Larry O trophies in '94 and 95'. It was just gold colored spray paint.

It's kind of strange defining getting bounced in the second round as "almost getting to the finals".

It's almost as bad as bragging about 90 wins in 2006 even though you didn't make the playoffs.

I don't know if this means you think he's great, average, or horrible. He isn't a genius scout or whatever because he drafted Jordan (not saying you're saying he is). I'd bet that most GMs are saying the same things about their picks that you see in the article, except for when it comes to consensus all-world prospects like Duncan, LBJ, Peyton Manning, etc. Drafting is a crapshoot and smart GMs pick busts just as much as bad GMs luck into stars.

Author:  Brick [ Mon Jun 26, 2017 2:04 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Apologizing for Jordan

Is this correct?

Reinsdorf gets no credit for "inheriting Jordan" and the guy who drafted Jordan gets no credit because he didn't think Jordan would be the greatest of all time?

That's not true. You're literally saying that there is nothing that seperates good scouts from bad scouts. That's a ridiculous opinion.
