Why are other GMs able to trade for and/or sign superstar and allstar players while John Paxon is not?
You've got to have the room under the cap to make a major move in free agency, and there's got to be somebody available and willing to come to you.
When he had his shot, John Paxson did sign an all-star caliber player in Ben Wallace, but he doesn't exactly fill the need for an inside scorer.
To this point, he has seemed unwilling to trade/break up the core that he drafted.
I still believe this team will get this straightened out, but, I also think that John Paxson will have to face the possibility of breaking up his team next summer when Gordon and Deng become restricted free agents.
I expect Paxson to match any offer Deng gets, but I do believe that Gordon will become part of a sign and trade IF this team doesn't take the next step this year.
Looking at this team, it's obviously got several issues:
1) They don't have an inside scorer.
2) They have a smallish backcourt.
3) I don't think they have a true point guard. I see Kirk Hinrich as more of a hybrid guard. Yes, he can and does play point guard, but he's got some shooting guard tendacies.
4) Is Ben Gordon a 6th man or a starter ?
5) Is Ben Wallace able to contribute every night ? We really need him to clean up the glass consistently, but, too often, I feel as he doesn't care much about the regular season.
6) Can the Bulls get any consistent contributions from either Jakeem Noah or Tyrus Thomas ?
Saying all this, like I said, I still believe this team will get better. They do have a lot of issues, but they won't continue shooting 39% as a team, and I think the team defense will get better.
