If the Bulls really want Rick Carlisle to become the team's new head coach, they better get on the phone with ESPN in Bristol, CT right now! There are reports that Rick is now the leading candidate to replace Avery Johnson as the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. As for Avery, I'm not sure that GM John Paxson has interviewed the former guard, let alone the New York Knicks, who are also looking for a new head coach. I've also read reports about the Cliff Claven-looking Mike D'Antoni in Phoenix possibly coming here as well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but despite their first round playoff exit, the Suns have not fired the guy who looks like the mailman from "Cheers"... What is Pax waiting for?

D'Antoini was given permission to talk the Bulls and Knicks. Since he is still under contract, the clubs would have to negotiate with the Suns for his release.

Of all the available candidates, D'Antoni is the one I want in Chicago.

What I can't figure out is why Paxson would be looking for assurances that he would be stressing defense (as the Suntimes says this morning). If you're going to bring D'Antoni here, why not just let him do his thing ? I think the main problem with the Suns this season was the Shaq trade. I know what they were trying to do, but it didn't work. I don't want D'Antoni to stress a different system/structure than what he's used to doing. Now, this may just be Paxson saying that he cares about defense......and we're going to do our best in those 120-110 games that D'Antoni would bring here, so we'll see.

Why would he want D'Antoni to put a larger importance on defense? I think it's because his run and gun style won't be good enough to win a title. Even in the NBA, you have to be able to play a certain amount of defense and if D'Antoni's believes otherwise then it's time to go somewhere else.

D'Antoni better step up his defensive preparation also or his time in Chicago will be a failure.

His run and gun style may have won a title if the Suns would have stayed on the bench vs the Spurs last season, but, overall, I agree, the Suns need to play better defense, and so will the Bulls with him to build long-term consistent success. I would say though that if the Bulls were looking for a coach to stress defense, they have the wrong guy. Just let him do what he does best.

I would love for D'Antoni to be our next coach. I would be shocked if he doesnt lead us farther then Skiles did. If they do hire him, I hope they try to get TJ Ford this offseason if the price is right.
