Post subject:  If Vinny Gets Whacked...Then Who?

In the wake of 2 really ugly home losses to the Toronto Raptors & New Jersey Nets respectively at United Center, I think it's safe to say that Vinny Del Negro is NOT long for continuing as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. I realize that the Bulls' roster has been shorthanded lately with Kirk Hinrich & Tyrus Thomas both sidelined with injuries, but it's inexcuseable what has happened to this team since the Bulls went only 1-5 on the "Circus Road Trip" to end November and start December. Unfortunately, it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better, and the time has come for Jerry Reinsdorf to cut his losses and admit hiring the inexperienced Del Negro was a big time mistake.

While one of Vinny's assistants, Bernie Bickerstaff, does have NBA head coaching experience and might be in line as a possible interim head coach if Uncle Jerry does end the Vinny experiment, I don't want another interim situation like what former assistant Jim Boylan had to deal with after Scott Skiles was fired around this time of year in 2007. I think there are two guys in particular I feel might be better suited for this job.

One of them is Avery Johnson, who expressed interest before VDN got the job, but is earning a lot of money NOT to head coach anywhere by his former boss, Dallas Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban. Avery's currently with ESPN by the way...The other name is Byron Scott. In addition to sporting rings with the L.A. Lakers during his playing days under then head coach Pat Riley in the late '80s, Byron is no stranger with dealing with point guards. He coached the New Jersey Nets earlier this decade to a spot in the NBA Finals with Jason Kidd on the point, and most recently coached Chris Paul with the New Orleans Hornets before getting fired himself earlier this season. I'm reasonably sure that Scott could enhance the development of Derrick Rose if Uncle Jerry opened up the wallet and ended the Vinny experiment before this season gets away in a bad Eastern Conference.

Of those you listed, SHARK, I like Avery Johnson.

But more importantly, who will Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade be willing to play for in 2010? :o

Bickerstaff for the rest of the year.

I wouldn't mind Scott, and he has experience with a young star PG, so that would be a positive.

The real question is what is to be done about "My Coach Vinny"'s screen-name?

When (the real) Vinny gets the chop here soon (cough, the week of Christmas, cough), does that absolutely necessitate a change, or can the screen-name be retained for nostalgia's sake?

He could PM Big Fan to change it a la John Kirk.

He can always go back to Coach Crapowski.

I'm not sure if was due to your humor or to my drunkenness, but I spit up a little on my keyboard after reading that.

Does it matter at all? Who is going to give Derrick Rose a personality transplant and make him into a stone cold killer? I'd put the over/under on number of playoff games the Bulls will win in the next 5 seasons combined at... 8.

While everyone's talking about the 2010 NBA Free Agent class headlined by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade & Chris Bosh, chew on this...Even though teams are trying very hard to clear their books, do you really think any of these three want to play for a freefalling Bulls' team with a clueless head coach, a Knicks' team that still sucks even with Mike D'Antoni as head coach, and a Nets team that arguably is terrible regardless if they're playing in New Jersey or in Brooklyn in the next couple years or so?

If it were up to me, Uncle Jerry should force John Paxson to coach this sorry bunch himself if Byron Scott isn't good enough...

I agree. This is Pax's team. He should coach this pile of shit. He was also an assistant under Phil Jackson for a season or two.

Truth be told, John Paxson was a really good analyst on Bulls' broadcasts before moving to the front office. His replacement, Bill Wennington, does a good job working mikeside with Chuck Swirsky on ESPN Radio 1000 & the Chicago Bulls Radio Network.

They'll wait until mid-season to fire Vinny--IF they decide to fire Vinny this season.

There are a lot of quality coaches out there but I think what this team needs most is a coach with lots of experience.

Hiring a newbie for this gig was a bad move and we new it all along.

You got that right and Uncle Jerry has to be held accountable. He's the one who wouldn't pay $6 million for the John Ratzenberger-looking Mike D'Antoni, now coaching the New York Knicks into nowhere. He also didn't want to fire his friend, Turner/TNT Sports' analyst Doug Collins for a second tour of duty as Bulls' head coach, before settling for Vinny Del Negro as a third option. The fact that Bulls' Executive Vice President John Paxson & General Manager Gar Forman are "cool with this" following a series of ugly losses, including the one last night in Atlanta baffles the hell out of me! This can't go on much longer!

I called for Thibodeaux the last time around (well, at least for him to receive an interview). Who was beating down Vinny the Black's door that we had to move that quickly? We could have waited a few weeks longer and interviewed Thibodeaux.

Here's part of the problem. Tom Thibodeaux's Celtics were in the middle of their title run and didn't want to be distracted. I don't think we'll ever know if Thibodeaux is the next big thing as an NBA head coach or if he's nothing more than a "flavor of the month".

Jeff Van Gundy, who teams with Mike Breen & Mark Jackson as ESPN/ABC Sports' #1 NBA team, was another name Steve Rosenbloom suggested when he sat in with Bernsy yesterday on 670 The SCORE.

My own suggestion of Byron Scott makes a lot of sense, especially because I think he can accelerate the development of Derrick Rose, much like he helped the development of another point guard, most recently Chris Paul in New Orleans. I think point guards are a speciality of Scott, and I think he's the best fit for what the Bulls need.

This season is a waste. So why try to make it any better by hiring a good coach and have to start paying him now? Del Negro is a nobody. He had no coaching experience coming in, anywhere. Not even college or the CBA or anything. We will either see him get fired on Xmas eve and they put in another nobody to finish the season, or he just finishes out the season sucking it. Then, they try to land a free agent. If they get him, then they pay a good coach.

Post subject:  Re: If Vinny Gets Whacked...Then Who?

My own personal pick to replace Vinny Del Negro is joining ESPN. Awfulannouncing.com reports that former Nets & Hornets' head coach Byron Scott is joining "The Worldwide Leader" as a studio analyst starting in January. Today, Sun-Times' Bulls writer John Jackson wrote a column about the team keeping VDN, despite the blowout losses that the team has had the last 3 weeks or so, not playing much defense & shorthanded with Tyrus Thomas & Kirk Hinrich sidelined. If the Bulls continue to get their clocks cleaned, even before Tyrus is slated to return from injury, a move has to be made, if only to give this team a swift kick in the ass.

You already know where I stand on assistant Bernie Bickerstaff, who may have NBA head coaching experience and may be first in line in a possible interim situation if VDN gets whacked but isn't much better. To me, if VDN gets whacked with blowout losses this week to the Lakers tomorrow, the Knicks Thursday and the Hawks Saturday night, Uncle Jerry should get the man who drafted these players to coach this team. That's right, Bulls' fans...Get John Paxson out of the front office and have him try to coach this paper-thin roster! :x

Good point. Firing Del Negro and finishing the season with the second coming of Jim Boylan really does nothing. I could see if this team was right on the brink of contention for the 7th or 8th spot, but that's not the case. They've clearly regressed for a number of reasons, so firing Vinny at this point would be like placing a band-aid on a gunshot wound. Let him finish out his two years and wave goodbye to him in June. This team won't look the same next season anyway.

If the Bulls want to make news this year, bring in Scottie Pippen to coach. I think he was interested and they might listen to a REAL superstar. What's the difference anyway.
