Remember last spring when the Hawk fans were screaming about their Hockey. The Blackhawks were on a run and took the spotlight away from the Bulls in the Winter and Spring time for the first time since probably the 70's. The few "real" Hawk fans were puffy chested but all of the "new" Hawk fans were so into the Hawks. I heard that the Hawks were taking over Chicago. They said they are now more popular than the Bulls. Now while I enjoyed the Hawks last Spring being a casual fan since the Bannerman, Secord, Larmer, Wilson and Savard years, I know Hockey will never be more popular in Chicago as Basketball. Maybe because of D Rose. Maybe not. But there are way more "real" Bulls fans than "real" Hawks fans. Non of the pretend Hawk fans ever talk about the them anymore. Sure they are not doing good but they just won the title. The Bulls are good, Young and fun to watch. The Bulls will be number one in Chicago during the winter for a long long time. The only way the Hawks will take over is if the Bulls are at the bottom of the league for a long time like the Grizzlies or the Clippers while the Hawks will have to be dominate for many years like the Lakers or Yankees. I dont hate the Hawks. I enjoyed their run. BUt nothing in Hockey can compare to D Rose shifting gears on the break and streaking down the court. The Bulls are probably closer to a title than the Hawks. |

But the Hawks got rid of a lot. The Bulls have added a lot. They are improved and getting better. They have maybe the best player in the game in a couple of years or so. Its not even a stretch to say the Bulls are a lot closer to a title than the Hawks. |

Hawks might've moved some key people out of the organization, but they still have the most critical person: Scotty Bowman. Teams that have had Bowman involved in the organization as coach/gm/front-office guru have won the Stanley Cup ~1 out of 3 times over the last 4 decades and make the SCF about half the time. As long as Bowman's involved with the Blackhawks at whatever level, they'll be perennial favorites to return to the Stanley Cup Finals. |

They literally did not rise above their station. People talk about the good old days of the Black Hawks being the hottest ticket in town. They were. But the same talk can be heard about the same time period in places like Philadelphia, Boston, Long Island, New York, and St. Louis. Sports weren't the media phenomenon they are now. The NHL has always been a gate-driven league, and that was fine when local team coverage consisted of radio pxp and a smattering of road games on one of the UHFs in town that you couldn't pick up without wrapping foil around the radial, and national coverage was Hockey Night in Canada and precious little else. The other three leagues, but especially the NFL and NBA, changed the game, so to speak, and made sports into a multimedia marketing phenomenon that the sclerotic old NHL couldn't keep up with. This is in part because to be frank, football and basketball televise a hell of a lot better than hockey. You can take in football passively while you eat nachos, whereas watching hockey requires you to actually sit there and watch what's happening to get what's going on. It's the same principle that sank Police Squad!. I have to get a haircut right now, so I'm cutting this short (and also my hair), but I'll be happy to pick it back up later. |
