I finally did it: I got someone to mention that it makes as much sense to amnesty Boozer now as it does next year. Here's the letter I shot off to Bernstein: Quote: Dan, Do you understand how the amnesty process works? Because when I hear anyone on the radio talking about amnestying Boozer, it doesn't seem like they do. If the Bulls amnesty Boozer they don't necessarily pay the $47M they owe him; rather, he goes into the waiver process, and other teams bid on how much they're willing to pay him for the remaining three years of his contract. Boozer, while vastly overpaid, is not in fact a bad player. In a waiver process, I'd estimate some team would at least be able to pay him $6M per over the next 3 seasons. If so, that's $18M. So the Bulls would be on the hook for $29M if that happened. That's a lot of money, *BUT*, consider: many are saying the Bulls keep Boozer for this year and amnesty him next year. Well, if they do that, they're on the hook for the $15M they owe him this year, and they whatever isn't picked up in waivers for the final two years. The Bulls likely save little to no money amnestying Boozer this year vs. next year. If you think you stand a good chance of amnestying Boozer after this year, it makes more sense to go ahead and do it now because: 1) Boozer had a good season this year; he was healthy, and put up good numbers. If Boozer gets injured or simply plays poorly, amnestying him next year will be much more expensive than it would have been this year. 2) Amnestying Boozer makes it possible to avoid paying tax this year, without having to lose assets you'd rather retain. The argument against losing Boozer would be that replacing his production would be difficult. However, that doesn't matter anymore because next season is a wash in any case. It makes sense to amnesty Boozer now; way more sense than trading more valuable players like Deng or Noah. Radio guys like yourself need to get that idea out there so the fanbase understands the dynamics and can pressure the organization to do the smart thing here. Amnesty Boozer now. It makes no sense to do it next summer. You don't need his production this year, and it's going to cost you around $30M either way. |

They probably should cut their losses and amnesty Carlos Boozer right now, but the Bulls won't do it...at least this summer. Because these Bulls as currently structured aren't good enough to challenge the new NBA Champion Heat, I think they've got to do whatever it takes to clear as much money off the books to avoid paying the luxury tax. If it means Luol Deng and/or Joakim Noah must go by way of trade, so be it. |

Unless you're dead-set on keeping Boozer through the end of his contract, you might as well bite the bullet not and not lose assets you'd otherwise retain. |

Can we amnesty Paxson and Swirsky, too? |

Pipe dream, he will never get amnestied ...he is the same player he was in utah ...as much chance at trading Soriano as Amnesty for Boozer. |

No chance this will happen untiil the final year of his contract. He's still a good scorer, even though he's limited to basically a jump shooter on offense who doesn't postup or offer much in terms of defense. He is one of the few players on the team who will throw up his share of shots, and next year, that's probably going to be needed without Rose and less overall depth on the team. |

Guys who never pay for tickets would prefer them to lose as much as possible next year to get a lottery pick since they have no chance anyway. |

this guy is fucking useless. In his prime, Ed Neely would've sent boozer cowering in the corner. |

I think the Bulls can cut their losses and amnesty Carlos Boozer, but it won't be this summer, based on everything I've heard. |

Only teams which are under the salary cap can offer substantial dollars...which certainly limits the potential bidders for Boozer. Also, the luxury tax doesn't become particularly onerous until 2013-2014. The Bulls will wait.

If I'm not mistaken, guys, the Bulls can only use this amnesty clause on a player once under the terms of the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement. |

That's as true in future years as it is now, though. Quote: Also, the luxury tax doesn't become particularly onerous until 2013-2014. The Bulls will wait. Yeah, but there's the repeater clause. You don't want to pay several years in a row, and if you pay, you don't want to blow your wad on a useless year. |
