He drafts point guards every damned year, and clinged to Asik until he got zip for him and didn't go after James Harden, a player that the Bulls needed.

How this guy is still waring a suit in a front office is beyond me.

Joakim Noah would have to be a part of any trade talks, and it's clear that the Bulls aren't willing to deal him under any circumstance. So yes, they're pretty much hamstrung right now.

Your thread title may be correct but the basis is flawed.
Assuming we're talking 1st rounders, Paxson has picked 3 PGs - Hinrich, Rose and Teague. No problem there. Asik was a nice acquisition who exceeded expectations and was held onto for a playoff run. No complaints there either. The Bulls had zero chance to obtain Harden. None.
There are plenty of mistakes for which Paxson deserves blame. Tyrus instead of Aldridge, James Johnson, etc. I just don't think the rumored high-profile trade possibilities over the years were based in reality.

Gar is the general manager, so I don't think it's possible for Pax to win a championship as GM. I can't say they will never win with Gar as the general manager. I think they are somewhat handcuffed by the big contracts they have and the possibility of making trades is lessened under the new collective bargaining contract. What happens in the future will depend on what happens with Derrick Rose and what the Bulls do with Boozer and Deng's contracts. The Bulls didn't sign Asik because they knew they would be overpaying for a backup center and that would hamper them later on when they will need to have more flexibility. Paxson has been an excellent GM in the past. They've made the playoffs every year except for one in the last 8 seasons. They have the right coach and they have a lot of good players. The Bulls fans have to be patient because it's a process and the Bulls may have to put up with another year or two of Miami Heat hoopla. But that team will become less relevant when Wade loses part of his game.

Would you be OK with trading Noah if the Bulls held on to Asik?

I would gladly trade Noah for some real value if Asik was here.

I don't like paxson, he is not a good executive ...overpaid for boozer, dang, hinrich.
Let Chandler go then signed a washed up older version of Chandler n overlays.
Brought Kirk back...signed rip, the tyrus Thomas/allridge fuck up.
held onto his guys when he could have traded some n improved team..offering Gordon the 5/55 deal...thank God he turned down...would like to see him replaced ...

If it meant getting a real scorer in return, then yes I'd be fine with that.

The fact a big deal was made about this team paying the luxury tax...for the first time is ridiculous!

Heat, Lakers, Nets and 76ers...are this years Cap issues. The Knicks for many years paid the cap tax and Dallas has been there before, expect to see it again. The Kings will probably be there soon with Balmer buying the team, OKC is going to be faced with the choice to go over or not, I expect they will.

All this and the leagues 3rd most valuable team in terms of outright value and gross income has never paid the luxury tax out of principle, until this year, they paid $4 Mill.

The point being that conservatism runs this team and why not?

They make the money regardless, taking a chance is the only way this team chances losing the cash flow and they know it.

Very reminiscent of a team that always "wanted" to win a word series, but making money is what mattered first.

It's kind of like the Bears in that the Bulls sold out games even in the pathetic post-Jordan era. They will make their money on tickets regardless of how good the team is.

I do agree that the paying the tax prevented them from getting Pau Gasol years ago. I don't know if that would have made them a championship contender, but they have been unwilling to pay the tax in the past.

The bigger issue than trading and drafting is the Bulls' inability to snag that big free agent. Ben Wallace was terrible. Carlos Boozer is serviceable, but he's probably going to making too much money for his performance in another year or two. There is a lot of bad NBA money out there on players that were overpaid based on past performance. There haven't been any killer free agents that the Bulls could pick up recently to put them over the top. LeBron, Wade and Bosh lied to everyone in the league who thought they had a shot at one of those three guys. There just haven't been players available that the Bulls could snag.

After this year, Rose has 4 years left, Gibson has 4 years left, Noah has 3 years left, Boozer has 2 years left and Deng has 1 year left. So unless they come up with some great trades all of these guys are locked in for the long term. Which means they don't have a lot of flexibility left. There is some money available if they want to go for a free agent if they don't resign Deng.

What the Bulls need is a 2-guard that can give you 20 points a game. But James Harden is not available and neither are a lot of those other guys who are making more than 10 million a season.

It's tough to win championships when the best player in the league is finally putting it all together. The Bulls are a good team that is well coached and fun to watch.

Yes. This current Bulls team is the 1989-93 Cleveland Cavaliers. Always gonna be in the conversation, but never gonna win.
