Bulls fans will have something to cheer about All-Star weekend...Tyrus Thomas is in the dunk contest. Hopefully he won't have to dribble.

The dunk contest has been irrelevant for at least a decade.

From today's Trib

Perhaps Tyrus Thomas will display more energy and enthusiasm during the slam-dunk contest than he did Monday in discussing his participation.

Asked if he were excited about becoming the first Bull since Scottie Pippen in 1990 to participate in the event as part of All-Star weekend, Thomas barely looked up from untying his shoes.

"Not really," Thomas said. "I'm just going to go out there, get my check and call it a day."

Asked if an opportunity to rub elbows with some of the game's greats could be beneficial for a rookie, Thomas kept unlacing.

"I'm just into the free money," he said. "That's it. I'll just do whatever when I get out there."

Thomas makes $3.26 million.

The winner gets $35,000. The runner-up receives $22,500. Third and fourth place are worth $16,125.

Earlier today Pax fined him $10,000 for this comment.

I can see where Pax is coming from but as GD points out the dunk contest is irrelevant. I don't have a problem with the comment. How many people over the age of 12 watch the dunk contest anyway?

I know why you're saying this Dolphin, but in the last five years, specifically when Jason Richardson was competing, there have been a few exciting displays. Andre Iguodala put on a show last year and got robbed by Nate "I needed 16 attempts to hit my winning dunk" Robinson.

The dunk contest is usually really boring. The last time I really enjoyed it was when Vince Carter showed up.

And Tyrus Thomas? He didn't show much tact, but I think it's clear he views it as a meaningless competition. That implication is no different from what Kirk Hinrich and Scott Skiles have said about the allstar festivities in the past.

Thomas has quick hops and amazingly long arms which makes a great player, not sure about amazing dunks outside of a game

I don't like the idea that the Bulls fined Thomas $10,000 for his remarks concerning the slam dunk contest. Players for years have skipped all star games or left early for various reasons. Thomas shouldn't have been that blunt, but I don't think it is worth a $10,000 fine.

I think Paxson overreacted.

This is the problem for sports stars. When they give wishy washy answers people roll their eyes and when they're blunt knickers get twisted. TT is a rookie and that comes to dealing with the media also. KC Johnson gave him a chance to redeem himself with the follow up question but TT missed that one aswell.
