Duncan Keith has been one of the most durable Blackhawks. Now, he’ll be sidelined for about a month.

Keith underwent successful surgery to repair a right knee meniscal tear, the Blackhawks announced on Tuesday morning. According to team physician Dr. Michael Terry, Keith should “return to full hockey activities in approximately 4-6 weeks.”

The defenseman played the entire game on Saturday, when the Blackhawks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1.

Keith has long been a picture of stamina and health. During the lockout season he played 47 of 48 games – his lone absence was a healthy scratch in the regular-season finale in which many Blackhawks regulars sat. In normal 82-game regular seasons, Keith has played in 74 or more contests since the 2008-09 season.

Whether or not the Blackhawks place Keith on long-term injured reserve is uncertain at this time. Keith’s contract, which runs through 2023, carries a cap hit of $5.5 million.

Legit chance of them not making the playoffs because of this.

No chance they miss the playoffs. Not this organization.

Bad news indeed. Well, guess this means they'll have to do their losing before Christmas instead of after.

Games in the next four weeks:
Florida
Tampa Bay
Anaheim
@ Winnipeg
@ Minnesota
Los Angeles
St. Louis
@ New Jersey
Edmonton
New Jersey

Then the circus trip:
@ Edmonton
@ Calgary
@ Vancouver
@ San Jose
@ Anaheim
@ Los Angeles

Flames look bad, Oilers are bad, Devils might be one of the worst teams in the league, but other than that, top teams throughout on this stretch. 32 points possible between now and December 1st. It'll take 18 to tread water, 15-17 to stay on life support, 14 and under and the Hawks are done-zo because once three-point games ramp up after New Year's there'll be no catching the teams ahead of them. bluh bluh curious hair is too negative

Correct. Its October and dam near everyone makes the NHL playoffs.

Hawks have to finish at least 5th out of seven and higher than the Pacific's 4th. Historically, the field is set by December 1st, then it's a 13-week caution flag to the playoffs. Most of the regular season is meaningless, just not in the way we traditionally think it to be.

Why didn't that Dano fella end up making the roster?

I thought you Hockey experts had him as a lock following the Saad trade.

He'll be up in due time. Can't take much more of Garbutt and Bickell clogging the roster.

For whatever it's worth, Stephen Johns, whom we had to give up in order to unload I'll Fuck Anything That Moooooves, was supposed to be a defensive beast the way Dano is at forward, but he couldn't crack the roster for Dallas. Dallas! Their blue line sucks!

Yeah that is something. Perhaps the Hawks made the right move in putting him in the deal

I think part of the appeal with Johns was that he was so unlike any defensemen we had: while we all love what Hjalmarsson brings, here was a guy who was this snarling, hulking beast who would go around blowing people up, just what we need for a team that's always being accused of being too small and too soft. The mentality was that sure, he was a little reckless, and sure, all those huge hits took him out of the play and made him kind of a liability, but playing in the Blackhawks organization would magically make those things go away. Maybe after four years of college and one year of AHL, they figured those things weren't going away, or at least not fast enough. For him not to be one of the best seven defensemen on the Stars roster out of training camp really shocked me. I know defensemen take a long time, but he has to bring more to the table than some forgettable plug like Jason Demers, one would have to think.

As for coveting a big defenseman, we gotta be careful what we wish for, because now we have Viktor Svedberg, whose closest comparable is the wacky waving inflatable tube man.

This will hurt, but I think we'll stay afloat and win enough for his return.

Agreed, though, that the Bickell problem has got to get solved.

Just remember it's probably going to take an even 100 points to make the playoffs. That's just a hair above six points in every five games, a .605 pace to be precise. I hope they can do it. We haven't seen played a Western team yet; they've been treading water all against the East.
