If they dump Garbut then they gave sharp away for the cap space. I wish they would have traded him elsewhere but whatever. They got a ridiculous stud in Panarin and the Columbus trade seems to have worked out swimingly. I've damn near forgotten the name of that guy they traded away.....

I thought I'd miss Saad more but I haven't really thought about him til you brought him up. I miss Sharp though.

Can't think about it this way. We knew Garbutt was shit from the day he got here. It was never a matter of anything but getting the cap space, no matter how much Stan called it a "hockey trade."

Incidentally, in the wake of Jim Nill getting a contract extension, I see a lot of people calling him the best GM in the league. WIN SOMETHING.

I'm ready to see Ryan Hartman, and more importantly, not see Ryan Garbutt. Just waive him and pray someone wants him for some reason.

I wouldn't be so sure about Panarin winning ROTY nor would I be enthusiastic. In case you forgot, a big part of the cap trouble in 2011 was Toews winning the Conn Smythe, with both he and Kane hitting major performance bonuses. Panarin, despite being 24, is on an ELC and thus would get a performance bonus for winning the Calder, which would mean dead cap space next year. Aside from that, the feeling that I'm getting is that voters are looking for any way to give it to Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings instead, who is putting up slightly lower numbers at age 19. People are heralding Larkin's superior +/-, as blatant a grasp at straws as there's ever been because everyone in 2016 knows +/- is a horseshit statistic, especially for forwards. In addition to already being 24 and playing with Kane, people are indeed mad that the Blackhawks could be so charmed as to get the rookie of the year, but then they're arguing against a charmed franchise by arguing for a Red Wing...?

Panarin will have to win the rookie scoring race decisively, like say 15+ points, to win the Calder. And don't rule out McDavid having a dynamite return from injury and voters wanting to give it to him for "overcoming adversity," again, straws. As it stands, he's up ten points on Larkin and Domi (do not forget about him, by the way) and 12 up on Eichel.

The better Panarin plays the better chance his cap hit goes from $900k to $3mil....this would definitely create a problem...winning the Cup again would make it easier to stomach.

Funny you guys are worried about a guy being good because of the impact on the cap and yet complain about other bad players. How about we just cheer for the guys to be great and worry about the cap later? No cap problems means crappy team. The Hawks seem to figure it out each year.

They will just have to execute the Hoss to lifeterm IR plan.

I don't think anyone is "worried about him being good." If he hits all his bonuses and we get penalized, so be it. The ideal situation, cap-wise, would be for butthurt voters to give the Calder to Larkin (as they did three years ago when they stupidly gave it to Jonathan Huberdeau over Brandon Saad) and then have the Hawks win the Stanley Cup anyway.

I mean they've drafted late for the last 6 or 7 years. Best team in hockey over that span. Yet they have the best rookie this year. Not the garbage teams with the high picks. Pretty impressive. Give credit to Bowman.

I have no problem giving credit to Stan when he deserves it, but he deserves little to no credit for Panarin. He fell in our lap.

Panarin wasn't exactly a diamond in the rough with the way lots of teams were after him, but I guess Bowman gets a little credit for creating a winning atmosphere where a player like Panarin could flourish. That seems to be a nice way of saying "do you want to live in Chicago and play with Patrick Kane or live in Columbus, Ohio and play with Cam Atkinson?"

By the way, while everyone talks about Kane winning the MVP and Panarin ROTY, let's not lose sight of how Duncan Keith is stealthily having yet another Norris-calibre season.

Keith is not having a Norris caliber season. Pretty middle of the road for him.

He's on pace for 57 points and the Hawks are 6th in goals against, which is a team effort but your #1 defenseman is going to be a big part of that effort. I think he's doing a great job. Doesn't matter, because it's going to come down to Karlsson and Klingberg, but he's playing at a very high level.

Penguins passed on yeastmode. Maybe they now regret that?

You sure about that? Pretty sure Panarin chose the Hawks as his first choice, never heard any story of a team passing on him this summer.
