Quick has been out of position a lot this game.

God knows it certainly doesn't have to be with him, but was this in response to anything in particular?

Yea. His ball retrieval was suffering because of it.

I'd go with Oduya. He looked truly lost way too many times last season. He seems to be more comfortable now and there's been times where him and Hammer have had a better game as a dpair than Seabrook and Keith.

Kruger showed that he's solid defensively and an all around smart hockey player in the past. This season he's actually making plays but that's just part of his progression. Still needs to work on faceoffs.

Both improved, slight edge to Oduya.

Even with the second half of second period a bit sloppy this team is incredible and a very complete team. In this short season they should be able to whether the storm and any injuries.

Hey, Hawks are awesome.

I would imagine that this start has pretty much guarenteed them a top 4 seed in the West.

It's too bad it's a shortened season cuz the Hawks might have beaten the all time points record. Though I'm aware that it's not the same with the shootouts and point for just getting to overtime.

Question: Before shootouts, did teams get a point for just going to OT? Or was 2 it points to the team that scored in OT and no points for the team that lost? Did teams each get a point if the game ended in a tie back in the day?

If you lost in OT, 0 points. 1 point for tie. 2 points for win.

I don't understand why teams get a point for just going to OT. I understand them getting one point if it goes to a shoot out. That makes sense. But if you lose in OT, you shouldn't get anything like it was before.

Why did they decide to make it like that? Any reason behind it?

1) They wanted to inflate the standings so more teams were in contention.

2) The line of thinking was that teams were getting complacent and playing for the tie rather than the win, so it was decided that teams would try harder to win in overtime once the first point was guaranteed. There was a window of about six, seven seasons when the standings read Win-Loss-Tie-Overtime Loss. What actually happened was teams still just tied all the time anyway, so they got rid of ties after the 2005 lockout.

There shouldn't be points for overtime losses. Shootout losses, okay, because at that point it has ceased to be team-on-team hockey and for practical purposes is just a tie, but a loss at 64:59 should be the same as a loss at 60:00. I'd rather just have wins and losses, though.

Agreed. Maybe they should also make OT 10 minutes long to try to avoid as many shootouts as possible.

Agreed, but then you get into the problem of going 30 minutes of play without a resurfacing. You'd be looking at some really sloppy ice by the end of that. So do you then have a third intermission before overtime/shootout? Remember that there are time constraints.

I'd like to see a five-round shootout as well. Five rounds is still just a crapshoot, but three rounds is a coin flip.

That's true. Do they resurface the ice for Playoff OTs? They must because of the importance and the fact that it could go 20 minutes before they stop. I just don't recall.

I guess they'll take the extra time for playoff games but don't want it for the regular season.

But is 10 minutes gonna be that much worse than 5 minutes if they don't resurface? At least make it 7 or 8 minutes.

They take a full intermission in the playoffs and play full periods, yes.

Hawks having a bad period here. Playing not to lose and it shows.

This felt a lot like the win against the Blues, except the Blues are a better team than the Kings. Dominated early, let up, escaped by the skin of their teeth. I guess I'll take it, though!

Wow, that was close.

Totally outplayed in the 3rd period. I swear the 3-0 lead in hockey is awful. Can't really fault the PK on those 2 goals. First one was a snipe by Richards, second one Emery gave him half of the net.

One more to tie the record and of course it's against Vancouver.

Anytime Hossa wants to start playing again would be nice.

So they're saying the Hawks tied the Oilers of the 80s for the best start in NHL history. But that's not true cuz the Hawks lost in OT this year, right? At least once I think. The Oilers would have gotten an L for an OT loss back then.

So they should probably say it's the best start since the points rule change.
