Speaking of zero service time, I wonder if our old GM will try to go after one of his failed draft picks, whom I'm sure the Hawks will non-tender. Yeah, that's right. Taking his Beach to south Tallon!

Panthers non-qualify (or non-tender, same thing) Jack Skille, probably marking the end for him. When people piss and moan about how the Blackhawks were built by tanking for draft picks, let us invoke his name. 20 goals in three full seasons and three partial ones, never figured out what to do with his speed, drafted 7th overall. Best thing he did was get traded for Frolik, who, himself a top-ten pick who never turned out right, at least played an integral run in a championship.

Today must be the day that qualifying offers have to be in. Leddy and Kruger got theirs, duh. No word on Beach, or the many others.

I could have said "Beach on the Beach," but the Panthers actually play west of Fort Lauderdale, right up against swampland.

@MarkLazerus: #Blackhawks defenseman Nick Leddy's new contract is worth $5.4 million over two years.

All this is doing is reaffirming that free agency isn't going to bring in big names and the Sort-Of-Youth-Movement is truly afoot, which is probably a good thing. Guys are ready (or as ready as they're going to get). Leddy's minutes and role were going to expand anyway, and $2.7 wasn't given to him based on what he's done so much as what they expect him to do.

There's about $7M in cap space left to work with and knowing Bowman he'll probably only sign 1-2 guys off of the Veteran Scrap Heap™ who Q will overplay until he realizes that Brandon Pirri and Jeremy Morin are infinitely better options/Bowman tells him to.

Grabovski has been bought out by the Leafs. He would be such an amazing fit at 2C. Please Bowman, sign this guy. The Hawks have 6 million to play with. Do it do it do it. Pleeeeaaaasssee.

Would be great. Lose a max effort guy in Frolik and grab another one in Grabovski. Surprising move, the guy has one disappointing year and gets bought out. He would create magic on a line with players like Sharp, Hossa and Kane.

It looks like this regime is ready to go with Pirri at 2C though.

What is the consensus view on Jimmy Hayes?

I don't think the Blackhawks are going to sign anyone of note. With Zeus re-signed they'll maybe get another scrap heap center to vie with Pirri/whoever since it doesn't look like they're keeping Kruger.

Roszival re-signed on a 1 year deal, no word yet for how much. He's the perfect 3rd pairing dman, good signing. Handzus was given $1 million.

Won't miss Stalberg but I'll be keeping a close eye on what he does in Nashville playing on the top 6.

It'll be interesting to see who the Hawks go with as their back up goaltender now that is Emery gone. Have to assume it's Raanta.

Are there any other options besides Raanta? I just assumed that is who it would be.

Not really. Hawks have don't have any other goaltending prospects.

What am I missing with Leddy? Just looks like a guy most of the time and looked especially bad in the playoffs. Not getting enough ice time or am I just hockey stupid?

- Still young and shows signs of improvement each season.
- He's an offensive dman, he'll never be a guy that you would send out there to shut down the other team's top line. (Racks up an absurd amount of points for a #6 dman)
- It takes dmen longer than forwards to reach their potential.
- Has the tools to be an elite quarterback on the powerplay

2 years at $2.7 a year is fine. Leddy-Roszival is the best 3rd pairing in the game.

I've liked him in his stints here . Big body , long reach , seems to have a decent scoring touch around the net. I think Q wants him to be more responsible defensively and play hard every shift which I don't think he does. That said I think he can easily replace Stalbergs 20 goals a year if not his speed.
