Sort the roster by point shares, a hockey approximation of baseball's win shares. Obviously, Panarin and Crawford are responsible for a great deal of the team's success. Tootoo and Desjardins have subtracted points from the Hawks. (So has Schmaltz, but he's young and already got optioned down.) Relative Corsi For has Desjardins at a damningly low -8.9.

Here's Second City Hockey on how awful Desjardins has been:

Quote:
Notice that literally every single one of them does better away from Desjardins. For some of them, like Niklas Hjalmarsson, that benefit is minor. But if you look at guys like Brent Seabrook, Michal Kempny, Nick Schmaltz, and Dennis Rasmussen, it’s a tale of two worlds. When those guys are with Desjardins, the results have been terrible. Otherwise, they’ve been quite good.

And possession-driving is a key part of Desjardins’ game given that he’s a poor finisher, as anyone could tell from his career 0.17 points per game average. He’s always been a fine defensive player who fits best on teams already loaded with offensive talent like the Sharks and the 2014-15 Blackhawks.

But this edition of the Blackhawks doesn’t have nearly as much offensive firepower up and down the lineup, and it makes it harder to justify playing Desjardins. It’s one thing to have Desjardins in the lineup when the bottom six also includes Patrick Sharp, Antoine Vermette, Teuvo Teravainen, and Andrew Shaw. It’s another when those guys are replaced with Dennis Rasmussen, Jordin Tootoo, and a couple rookies.

Tootoo and van Riemsdyk get all the shit for being bad but Desjardins has quietly been the worst player on the team. Sucks, because he was a nice complementary player in 2015, but this is wretched. When Schmaltz, who is tearing it up in Rockford, is ready to come back, it should be at the expense of Desi's roster spot.

Blackhawks have access to this info and sure don't seem to make decisions on past performance so I'm fine if they release him.

I'm always happy to make allowances for Good Locker Room Guys. There's value in organizational soldiers who come up through the system and maintain continuity. Rozsival must bring some sort of veteran voodoo we can't see. Carcillo was here for the second time because Toews and Kane asked for him. Seabrook, through whatever struggles he may have in his own end, is reportedly the team's real captain. But Desjardins was a San Jose guy, he's old without being a wily veteran, and has only been here for under two years. Give his spot to one of our own draft picks at this point.

Also, for all the agonizing over Seabrook being a fatty-fat-fat-fat last year, dude put up 49 points, nine fewer than the #1 center, so he doesn't even belong in the company of guys who keep spirits up while sucking on the ice.

DesJardin only turned 30 in July...He's not that old. He's only hitting them up for $800k. He can probably scuffle around the league for another 6-8 years at the veteran minimun. Not a bad gig.
