Due to the fact that there was a lengthy lockout last year, are there any fans willing to put an asterisk next to the Blackhawks' championship? I remember a lot of people on this board who couldn't wait to discredit the 2012 Miami Heat for winning a championship during a lockout-shortened season, yet I haven't really heard the same for this Hawks team. Why is there a double standard?

This has been bothering me for awhile. Since they won the championship actually. I wanted to give it some time to see if anyone would try to discredit the Hawks' lockout championship, but I haven't heard it.

No asterisk, because they always wore suits on a plane during the lockout.

Is it odd that the only people responding in this thread, are the exact people least likely to have a hockey conversation...?

They're the only ones left who read my posts.

I think everything hockey related should have an asterisk next to it...

It'd be dumb to put an asterisk by either championship. Both teams were the clear cut best regular season team.

Can they cut the Stanley Cup in half then?

I completely agree. I just remember the outcry when the Heat won their title that somehow the lockout invalidated it.

I've seen some talk about people mentioning how this Hawks team is one of the best NHL teams of all time and people quickly shooting it down because they didn't play a full season. I've also seen people saying that there should be an asterisk for the streak because they didn't play the Eastern Conference this past season. But an asterisk for the Cup? Nope.

The Heat are the most disliked team in the NBA where as the Hawks are one of the most liked teams in the NHL.

And I agree with Dan. Arguing asterisks for either is just dumb as both were clearly the best teams in their respective leagues.

There are a few rings that have been taken off the cup and moved to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Plus, there are actually 3 cups.

Perfectly valid to asterisk the Heat's championship. You should probably asterisk every championship. Rigged league.

Because this is a Chicago sports fan message board and those of us who provincially like the local team more than Appreciating Greatness wanted to get their jabs in on a guy who's sort of a dickhead, while knowing deep down that in a league where's it's practically celebrated that the regular season doesn't mean shit, playing 66 games instead of 82 doesn't invalidate or mitigate anything.

I think the '95 Devils and '13 Blackhawks should both be asterisked, because a season consisting of only 48 intraconference games is markedly different from 82 against the entire league. That said, the whole but-they-never-played-the-East thing is slightly overblown to me, considering one third of the old East (RIP, Southeast Division) fucking blew every year and especially last year. It's little more than a biased media having to grind their dicks on the glorious Pittsburgh Penguins, and while I'm not coming it at from quite that angle, not seeing half the league was always something in the back of my mind. Still, the Hawks demonstrated wire-to-wire dominance in the season that was laid out for them (the '95 Devils, for comparison, had a decent season, dodged a loaded Quebec team that won it all in Denver a year later, and got hot late), and no one's going to asterisk my memories of bonking my head on the ceiling when Seabrook scored on Howard. It wasn't even a low ceiling.

Major League Baseball until 1997 negates your argument that an asterisk is necessary because there were only intraconference games.

That's a bad argument and you know it. There's no tradition of that sort of thing in the NHL. It was an aberration forced by a lockout.

It's not like ONLY the Blackhawks played a shortened schedule .... everyone had the opportunity to play the same amount of games. Asterisking, in general, borders on the south side of Assville.

As far as the Hawks go, I would almost argue that the past season was more difficult than the standard 82-game season, due to (a) a shorter-than-normal "training camp", and (b) the shortened season being compressed, as there was around one more game per week than average, so there was less time between games to rest up.

But again, it isn't like this was the case only for the 'hawks or just a few teams. Everybody had the same variable to deal with.

I could see if the 'hawks were an old-ass team, but I don't think one can say that. Lowest avg age is Winnipeg (26.506), oldest is New Jersey (30.543), and the Blackhawks are at 28.631, in the "upper" part of the middle (http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams).

The whole notion - Heat or Blackhawks - is a complete non-starter and is something borne out of loudmouth "fans" or columnists with nothing to write about and should be treated as such ... which is to say, marginalized if not outright ignored.

We're getting away from the original point here. Whether 48 games in 99 days is harder than 82 in 186 isn't pertinent. The fact is that relative to history, what the Devils and Blackhawks did was not the same as what other championship teams did, and this fact should be denoted.

In the case of this particular thread, it was something borne out of my curiosity of why two championship teams during lockout years have received such vastly different fan perceptions. Hockey Gay, Curious Hair, and Minooka Meatball all gave good explanations so I thank them for that.

I politely disagree.

Every team had the same scheduling constraints and were given equal opportunity to win the cup; the effort required to win the Stanley Cup was absolutely no different for the Blackhawks than it was for the Coyotes, or any other team. Rules changes are far more impactful on a season's worth of games, so by that measure there should be wild asterisks everywhere anytime there's a significant rule change (e.g., goalie trapezoid, blue/red line reconfiguration, quicker puck drop after play stoppage).

It's separation and segregation of a given championship for an arbitrarily ascribed reason. From my vantage point, it's like saying we should asterisk a hockey championship because if was warmer than normal weather and the ice was slower ... which would be just country fucking dumb, just as it's dumb to blame the Heat for something they had no control over either.
