Cuz the average goalie in the league back then let in a lot more pucks than the average goalies do today.

Yeah, you'd have the outlier Ken Dryden or Tony Esposito who'd post numbers somewhat comparable to today's goalies--but, on average, night in night out, players 25-30-40+ years ago were facing goalies who gave up 3.5 to 5 goals a game on average.....

today, the worst goalie gives up fewer than 3.5 goals a game and the average is down around 2.25.

I insist that you are smarter than this. Think about how many -- or rather how few -- Europeans and Americans played in the NHL in the '80s. By casting a wider net, there are better players rounding out rosters than there have ever been. I agree that scoring is too low, but the days of Wayne Gretzky running roughshod over bum-ass L.A. Kings teams of generic hosers are over forever.
