They play the Wildkitts tomorrow night at Loyola in the Danny Did Tourny.
I'm not 100% sure about this because it was so long ago, but I think the guy who was Danny's dad and started Danny Did played basketball on some teams that my buddy coached at Margaret Mary's.
My friend started coaching because his nephews were on the team and then kept on even after they graduated. God knows why anyone would want to do that. But he was a young guy who loved hoops and liked being like kind of a big brother to these kids.
Anyway, pretty much every kid on his teams was a little asshole except the kid who ended up being Danny's dad (damn, we are really old!), who was the nicest kid you would ever want to meet. I shouldn't say that. There was also a big kid who was the son of the previous coach who was a really good kid. He ended up being a flame-throwing pitcher at St. Ignatius and Northwestern.
The parents were the worst. One of them was Dick Devine, yeah, that Dick Devine. I think Devine had been a decent baller back in the day (of the two-handed set shot). Devine's kid was no damn good, but of course Dick thought he was Pete Maravich. He wanted the kid to take every shot. The parents almost had an insurrection against my buddy. But the thing is, none of them had the time or the real desire to actually coach the team. It's a pain in the ass. Devine actually thought my buddy should show up every day, coach these little punks, and then on Saturday he would step in and run the team during the games. Of course my buddy wasn't going for that and he had enough back up from certain factions that it never happened. It didn't stop some parents from whining though, but ultimately they knew if they didn't shut up, one of them was gonna be there going through drills on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
