Lovie was a good man and decent coach but that doesn’t cut it in the Big Ten. They need a name and a guy willing to bend the rules to get players to commit to the cornfields.

Focus on basketball, don't spend much on football until the NCAA implodes. Covid has shown that they should just make college football U22 football and allow colleges to have teams with non students if they want.

That's all he needed to do and he failed miserably at it.

I thought Lovie would open a pipeline of recruiting in Texas. It seemed like he spent his entire Bear career scouting Abilene Christian but apparently couldn't be bothered to travel at Illinois.

Lovie treated this as a retirement. I'm honestly surprised to see he is only 62. He seemed older.

Those are some great names. Norvell is a great coach. I think Leonard would be a program builder. I really wouldn't mind the Bears looking into him if they fire Nagy. Leipold will be a hot name.

I wonder if they could pry Luke Fickell away from Cincinnati since OSU has a guy in place for probably the next decade.

Lovie only signed 13 HS recruits in each of last two classes. So he had to rely on transfers. Ignoring Illinois and focusing on Texas and Florida didn't go very well.

In his defense, was dealing with a mess of a program. I thought that last year, he might have turned a corner. He did get some big recruits here and there, but the team was routinely outclassed and games were over in the second quarter.

I don't think they need to bend the rules, as Zippy suggested. They need a young coach who can sell the program to recruits to come and fix this. Too bad they missed out on Fleck.

Bielema would be perfect for the Illini. I already hate him from his time at Wisconsin, so that would be a natural fit. It was hard seeing someone like Lovie in the position that I actually liked.

The Cincy coach would be interesting. I know nothing about him, but he's obviously done a good job. If not, get the guy from Wisco, as I said earlier.

Let’s slow it down a little bit here.

You guys really think coaching the Illini football team is a better gig than Cincinnati?

Yes. Of course. There's no doubt about it. A coach might not stay there long, but do you want to prove yourself against the Big Ten or the AAC teams?

Both are stepping-stone jobs for sure, but come on, bub!

U of I is where coaches go to die.

No chance the hottest coaching name is going to risk his big break on the Fighting Illini.

Sorry for being bitchy, but I think we need to come back to reality.

It is but he's in line for a bigger job than Illinois pretty much whenever he wants it.

Lovie was always a lousy coach, he's shown with more power the worse he gets. His hirings were terrible. This was an unbelievably dumb hire and a huge waste of time and money.

People coach at Cincinnati to get a bigger job. It's a stepping stone. Illinois isn't a job you take looking for a better job.

Illinois is a step down from Cincinnati because coaching careers die there.

Is Cincy a better job than Auburn then?

Coaches get fired all the time all over college football. Illinois has made a series of bad hires but it's still a job that is more sought after than Cincinnati.

No it’s not more sought after.

Don’t move goal posts by bringing up a real football conference like the SEC.

The Big Ten is much closer to the AAC than the SEC.

Don’t fool yourself.

My mind won’t be changed, but you’re welcome to reply.

More of the coaches' fault on that one, though what you say is pretty damn interesting. It worked out for Mackovic, but he was six coaches ago or something.

But as Brick said, many bad hires.

I can only name two Cincy coaches. Kelly and whomever they have know.

I'd question the intelligence of any coach that took the Illinois job and didn't see it as a stepping stone.

Yep.

Cincy is good at finding coaches.

Every conference has coaches fired after a few years. Which one do you want me to choose? Since Carr left in 2007, Michigan has fired a coach after 3 years, 4 years, and really wants Harbaugh to fire himself after 5 years.

I think it depends on the type of coach they look to hire. If you hire a younger guy who has high aspirations they are going to look at Illinois as a stepping stone.

With that said there is no way they are getting the Cincy coach.

You can't really beat being a successful Big Ten coach though. Look at Dantonio or Ferentz. High pay, insane job security, a chance at a national title if it all goes right, and you don't have to get your brains beat in by Alabama every year.

I'm not changing the argument. It may seem that way since you aren't actually making an argument though.

If Illinois hired a Dantonio or Ferentz type of coach do you think they would be looking to jump ship or be happy to make $5 million a year for 15 or so years and win 60%+ of their games?

15 or so years ago, the Big Ten wasn't too strong, but the last five years, they've done well in bowl games. Not sure about the AAC.

AAC is definitely on the rise, though. Better than the MAC.

Make a list of the AAC coaches that have chosen to go to another school to coach.
Make a list of the Big Ten coaches that have chosen to go to another school to coach.

The AAC list will be significantly higher and that's including a guy like Bielema who left but was basically told to leave by Barry Alvarez.
