Expect it to be 41 degrees and windy. I always had a love/hate thing with games this time of the year. Hopefully no rain after Saturday tough. |

Outside of Kelly High school and Immaculate Conception, who else has a turf baseball field? I heard Rice has been fundraising for one. |

I hated early spring baseball. We weren’t safe for any warmth pretty much whole season of road games if there was any wind off the lake. |

My son's team's home field sat 400 yards across the outer drive from Lake Michigan. It was a struggle all season I remember, oh... 30 years ago almost, being forced to pitch a game (I was a soft tossing righty with no movement on his pitch) up near Lincoln Park. We left the burbs and it was 70 degrees and sunny. Got to the field and I was first blown off the mound by the wind and then worked through 3 innings of, well not scoreless innings. I think it was the last time I pitched. Got the no decision though, thank god the wind was blowing in. |

Lower level games are canceled even more often. |

They're supposed to cancel if it's under 40 but most teams don't. As of now Libertyville vs Lakeview is still on for tonight and there's no chance it gets up to 40. RR- I'm not going. |

And at higher temps. Fixed, especially if the fields haven't had a couple of good days of sun to dry them out. |

You're going to be clearing out more than just the DVR. |

College games are getting banged all over the Midwest. No reason to play HS games today but i’m sure some overzealous coaches will still play and put their players at risk of getting injured. |

I saw one score in the DH today, Aurora Central I think. Our game got tanked for tonight. The coach mentioned that 40 degree rule. |

One of the teams in our group is playing a St. Patrick's Day Tournament outdoors. The coach asked me why we were not playing and I just laughed at him. 40 degrees high with snow scheduled for Saturday. |

The 40 degree rule is a rule of thumb. If it's sunny and not windy and 38, they are playing. Honestly 45 overcast and windy is much worse. I can remember playing in the snow before. It's up to the coaches and the umpire at that point. |

It is silly to try to get ready in late February and early March just to play in crappy weather or have half the games canceled. We are playing in Florida next week, which was done to help get us ready for conference play. We'll get five games in down there over Spring break. We have gotten four cold games in so far. |

I wonder if some states still run HS baseball seasons to start then and finish in late June/July. In this area with the top tier travel programs rolling, I just can't see that happening. I know of 10-12 year old travel kids who start playing down in Mississippi in February. I can all but guarantee they're annually in the top 5 programs in the Midwest each year, and have been among the best in the country for the last 6-7 years. |

Yes, and I have thought about that because our travel team picks up when high school ends. It has been my experience that football drives the end of travel season. But football is declining so rapidly as a widely played sport (down over 50% in IL high school participation) that you could push travel back. Of course it would be a huge task to make all the changes. But baseball is silly this time of year. It is a rare day before May where the field conditions are good or better and the weather is anything approaching comfortable for play. The biggest problem is getting ready for the season because most practices are indoors in tunnels and gyms. I went to the Under Armor All America game when it was at Wrigley the year Addy was on that team. It is like the top 35 high school players. Nearly every kid was from TX, GA, FL, CA, OK with the balance being some other Southern State. |
