They don't really get the UIUC perspective, so there may be other stuff going on. It's too bad. I always thought the Feds would kick in money for positions like this.

Our own Drunk Squirrel grows "culturally important corn," though that philistine says it's for the animals that won't eat the new-fangled corn. He's doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

Yeah, I thought it was the job of the Department of Interior/Bureau of Indian Affairs to cultivate relationships with Tribal nations and Indigenous communities. The U.S. government has specific trust and treaty obligations it needs to fulfill with Tribes, and some of these relate, I believe, to agricultural issues and the stewardship of natural/cultural resources. If UIUC is attempting to establish new relationships with Tribes, it probably should be working in partnership with DOI. Was the university ignoring DOI authority by creating this position?

Every year I actually do kick around the idea of planting some "Indian" corn. Is that cultural appropriation?

We had MANY dealings with the Shoshone when I ran the Shiloh. The Virginian was always very good with them. He'd make an excellent Vice Chancellor of Native Affairs.
