Post subject:  New Statistic?

So, I'm cleaning my garage and listening to the Arizona-USC game on Sirius and they mention (after discussing great things to do in Michigan City for the ND game) that USC has picked up 29% of their available offense while ARI has picked up 39%.

I've been watching football for the better (and worse) part of my life and have never heard this stat. I assume it means if you start at the 50 and drive to the 30 you have picked up 40% of your available offense.

I'm thinking about whether this is really an informative stat or not and am thinking that it is a pretty interesting description of offensive efficiency.

Anybody ever heard/used this before? Just curious.

I'm not sure that it's a useful statistic, as teams would pick up a higher percentage of potential yardage if they are down big and picking up garbage yardage, just like "total yards" is a flawed statistic. Also, most stats are useless if they aren't adjusted in some way to take account of competition faced. Those are tenative ideas though, and I'd have to think about it more.

It's a worthless stat because you, me and the other viewers actually have to think about it. Maybe coaches care about this kind of numbers but I care more about time of possessions, yards per play and turnovers. I don't ever see needing to use a stat like this.

Yeah, I am not sure how useful that stat is to the average fan....
