Northwestern Women's Lacrosse. Laugh all you want, but it's a frickin' fun game to watch. These girls came from nowhere a couple of years ago and became the first college team outside of the Eastern timezone to win the Men's or Women's NCAA title. And they did it again last year. They have an 18-1 record this year and heading to the next round of the playoffs against Syracuse this Saturday. Starts at 1:00 PM on the fields that overlook Lake Michigan... not a bad way to spend Saturday afternoon.

My (other) beloved - the Maroons...

At one point, the University of Chicago's football teams (nicknamed the Monsters of the Midway at the time) were among the best in the country, winning seven Big Ten Conference titles from 1899 to 1924, including a national championship in 1905 while playing at the old Stagg Field. The University is also one of only a few schools to be undefeated in football against Notre Dame. In 1935, Chicago's Jay Berwanger was the winner of the first-ever Heisman Trophy. The following year, Berwanger also became the first player to be drafted by the National Football League.

I have watched women's lax and it is not all that interesting. I find the protective cup that a goalie must wear to be funny though.

Are these the same gals who wore flip flops to the White House and outraged a nation of shoe-wearing traditionalists?

I suppose it was only a matter of time until that comment was made.

Seriously though, the girls are good. I've seen them play about 5 times this year. These chicks explemplify TEAM.

And when do you expect to hear the word Three-Peat in Chicago again?

Three-peat, baby. When's the last time you heard that in the greater Chicago-land area?

It's a university now, and a fairly decent school. Mike Holmgren donated big bucks for a nice looking stadium on Foster Avenue.

Not to rain on your parade, but U of C cheated their way to all those wins. They bought recruits, forced teachers to make sure athletes qualified, etc. Pretty similar to what happens today (Ohio State, USC, Texas, etc.) but back then there was no NCAA to enforce rules prohibiting such behavior.

To be considered a dynasty you have to be a dominant power a lot longer than a few years. Btw, no one even follows Lacrosse except people on the East Coast. It's about as relevant on the college sports scene as college golf or gymnastics. It does look like an interesting sport to attend though.

You call it cheating. We call it creating a special purpose entity for football to isolate recruiting risk.

Fuck you NIU Huskie... you are the biggest buzz kill on this entire board. Do you realize that LAX is the fastest growing sport in America? Do you know it is the technically the oldest sport in North America that is currently being played at the collegiate level? You are an idiot.

What about cage fighting? That sport has been growing very fast too.

Thanks for the language and compliments. Just because a sport is the oldest doesn't necessarily make it any more relevant than it already is. If you think its going to pass football, basketball, or baseball anytime soon then you are sorely mistaken.

I barely said anything more about the sport than you and good dolphin said. You both thought it wasn't a very relevant sport.

You are talking about the relevance to the college sports scene. Is it a sport? Yes. Is it played in Chicago? Yes. So it qualifies. If you don't want to consider it... then move along and post in some other thread. All you've done so far in this one is bash some major accomplishments of some hard working young women. Did you have any idea that these girls were the first team ever to win the National Championship outside the Eastern Time Zone? And by the way, they've won it three years in a row... not an easy feat.

Just because it's not baseball, baksetball, or football doesn't mean its not relevant. Go see a NU Lax game before you say the sport doesn't matter.
