Rosters for the WNBA's 12 remaining teams will shrink to 11 active players this season, a move that will reduce the league's job market by as many as 37.

When the Houston Comets were folded by the league in December, a maximum of 13 jobs were lost.

"I can't say this is because of the economic times," Connecticut Sun general manager Chris Sienko said Wednesday. "There were some teams in the league that weren't even carrying that many.

"We carried 12 last year; 13 the year before. And we'd always brought our extra players on the road with us. But some teams carried only 11. "The question ultimately became, 'What's best [for the league?]' Are we trying keep things [uniform] across the board."

The league's salary cap will stay the same ($803,000) this season. So the savings will essentially provide teams an extra $70,000 to use to enhance the top of their rosters.
