I recently moved into a new house. For water we are on our own well, and the quality/smell of the water is just complete shit. Anyone else here live on well water and have their own water filtration system within their home? I've gotten some quotes that have ranged from a couple thousand dollars to around 10 grand. The differences in prices seem insane but I wanted to ask the group if you had any recommendations.

And yes, I will take the MOVE recommendation under advisement.

Shouldn't this have either been disclosed and/or discovered on the inspection?

Well, well water generally is nasty as hell. Sounds like the prior owner had no issue with it...I'm pretty sure a whole house water filtration system isn't a code requirement.

The water has to go through testing at the county for any bacteria. The tests came back fine and the water wasn't terrible when I bought the place. The previous owner was most likely regularly shocking his well, which I don't really want to do. I'd rather invest in something that will treat the water once it's pumped.

You get to live near a major city with all of the benefits including top notch infrastructure and immediate access to quality goods and services and you buy a house with a friggin well? I know you're being pushed in the 'country' direction but nut up and pump the brakes, son!

Sounds like I have to wait for Leash to come back to recommend what he and his hillbilly friends like to use.

Depending on how bad it is a softener and iron filter will do the trick. Hopefully you don’t have organics to deal with because at that point you are talking big bucks. Can’t remember what my plumber had but it was a pretty crazy system that involved bleaching and charcoal filters but his water was god awful brown coming out of the ground. In current house we run the water through a iron filter for whole house and RO for drinking and ice.

Bacteria in the well water. Or, if a sulfur smell just on the hot side, the anode rod went bad in your water heater. If you have iron, get a iron filter/water softener combo unit. A water softener alone will take iron out to a certain extent, but the mineral inside the softener will go bad quickly.

From https://www.quickenloans.com/blog/home- ... ts-testing

Quote:
Water inspection (approximately $150): If the home is supplied by a well system, one of the most important inspections is water testing. The water should be tested for many things including water hardness and metals like lead, cadmium and arsenic. The water needs to be tested by a laboratory that is found on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website. If the home has a septic tank, it will also need to be tested to ensure the system is working properly.

Al's Pizza and Prairie Landing Golf Club are legit reasons to put up with shitty water.

I had a well when I lived in Warrenville. Just needed a good softener and a faucet filter

I know someone who owned a hair salon at Rt 59 and North Ave in West Chicago. She said they could tell if someone was on well or Chicago water from their hair. I think its about 50/50 out that way.

Yup. That's pretty much where I'm leaning. I had a sales guy here 2 nights ago who was pushy as hell trying to sell me a filtration system that would cost me about as much as a new car. I nearly had to push him out of my house by force. it was like Glengary Glenross sales tactics..
