Post subject:  Acoustic Guitars

Why is it that all the acoustic guitars made today, even Martins, are junk? All these guitar manufacturers like Taylor, Guild and even Martin to a lesser extent have gone cheap on materials and now produce guitars with thin bodies, that if they were ever dropped would probably shatter on impact. There's no substitute for vintage guitars from the 70s or earlier, but most of them need a neck reset, and there's no guarantee that it will turn out all right.

I'm in the market for a new acoustic. I have two guilds, a '76 D-40 and a 2000 DCE5, but both are in bad shape. The D-40 needs a reset and there isn't a competent luthier in the whole state that can do it, except maybe Cremer in Aurora.

I'm looking at vintage Martins and Guilds, like a Martin D-18 but not with the V neck profile. If you have a good one that you're willing to sell with a pristine neck, let me know.

Just talked to him. Unfortunately, he doesn't do neck resets but told me who does---Bob at Third Coast.

From what I can tell you simply have to pay a ton to get the good stuff. Every major maker has their Mexico or Asian counterpart brand.

In some case you get lucky and get a good set up. I bought a Epiphone Les Paul pro and changed the pickups. Couldn't be happier than if I had a Gibson and aside from ego why pay so much more? That is for a hack amateur not a pro.

Yeah I haven't seriously picked one up in a year I would guess? Wasn't really ever a great player. I have been thinking about recommitting.

My main problem has been retaining information if I take too long off. They recently have been trying to tell me all these years I have OCD/ADHD. I say well knowing that earlier might have made shit easier.

Anyway I always was also interested in fixing older guitars and selling them. I think some are like art pieces.

I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar it meant that you were a protest singer.

Maybe he is. DR definitely has a contrarian streak.

I'm the same way. The problem with luthiers is that they are like lawyers: always overpromising but underdelivering.

I would say that 90% don't know their craft, mainly because most cannot play worth a shit and cannot hear what they're supposed to be repairing.

I played a few chords back in the day until one time my father in law was getting under my skin with his Fox News bullshit and I cut the tip of my finger off while making a salad. it was always too sensitive to play after that.

Agreed I would never claim to be some sort expert for hire.

Ever consider a PRS acoustic? I doubt I will ever buy another guitar other than a PRS...unless I get an 8 string. My custom 24 is beautiful!

They kinda sound like a Taylor.

Vintage guitars are worth a lot more than some of the new stuff. There are decent acoustic guitars being made now, but premium guitars made in the USA are going to be a lot more expensive. Between eBay, Craigslist, Reverb, Guitar Center's used website and Facebook Marketplace you should be able to find something you want to own. Unfortunately the Amigors guitar expo is canceled.

You have to decide whether you are a player or a collector. As a player you can only play one at a time. But as a collector you can be hooked on buying guitars. Collectors probably don't play everything they own.

Takamine makes very fine, well-made guitars.

I like their tone better than Taylors' and a lot of the newer Martin's

If you spend enough, though, the new Martins are pretty damn good.

We just bought our daughter a used Fender Tim Armstrong hellcat acoustic/electric. Sounds great to me but I'm not a guitar guy.

I come back to second Takamine. I have an acoustic electric that is solid. Particularly for the second hand price.

I have an overseas made Oscar Schmidt (Washburn) that I bought for maybe $100-150 ten or so years ago. I also have a Canadian-made Simon Patrick (Seagull) that was more money.

I would honestly just buy the damn Oscar Schmidt acoustic again. It really plays and sounds quite well. I'll be damned if I'm dropping $2K for a Martin / Taylor when I fucking hate playing the things
