I finally convinced my new biz partners to open their first store near me:
www.deepdiscount.com
goes Brick & Mortar at: 1943 Glacier Park by Route 59 in Naperville -
we've got the best price on the new Traveling Wilburys 3-disc set - it's a 29.98 list & everybody else has it at $25 but we've got it at $21.

Went into the store today actually, and I have to admit that I wasn't really impressed with the discounts. While the prices on the music items were considerably lower than many other stores, the movies, games, and books were a mere $2-3 less than I can pay elsewhere.

I have to question the purpose of selling games in the first place. I would imagine the discounted games at GameStop nearby would bring a larger pull.

I'm confused Ugie,
Are you saying you'd rather pay $2-3 more somewhere else, or that other places offer better deals?

Ugueth is 100% against saving money.

What I'm saying is that $2-3 isn't going to convince me to drive to that store more often than other retailers, especially if said retailers are closer.

Now, if it was $5-10 cheaper, I would consider it.

Ugueth Will Shiv You questions just how deep the discounts are at deep discount. He would have felt better if it was somewhat deep, not shallow, or dive at your own risk.

Got it.
I see your logic on a $40 game, but since books and movies are normally around $20, $3's not a bad price break.
The store's too far for me to drive to pick up a single item, but it sounds like a good place for some mass qty. shopping around christmas time.

How extensive was their music selection?

They have a ton of CD's, I will say that. I noticed the biggest deals on the compilation sets. Otherwise the prices were comparible to that of Best Buy.

The paper-thin margins on "entertainment media" only allows us to drop our prices by just a few dollars as we hope to make more in the long run on volume. Again, I called 4 stores for the new Traveling Wilburys CD set & it was $25 at Best Buy & Borders & FYE & Rolling Stones Records, but we are at $21.

I kind of figured there was some margin that you had to follow in regards to setting your prices. However, how many Deep Discount stores are there for you to say that volume will make a difference? I have never even heard of the name until I saw the store a couple weeks ago?

Deep Discount is huge on ebay with many people using them as the delivery mechanism for selling videos and cd's. I've purchased a few videos on there only to find out that they were buying from the site. I'll be interested to see how the brick and mortar does.

It's a pretty well known internet brand.
Great if you're looking for older titles.
I remember finding a ton of Rhino stuff on there

They don't. Roy is dead and Petty just looks like he is.

I was interested to see that DD had a brick and mortar; it's right by my girlfriend's place, and I bored her with a bunch of speculation about the "plan." Are they using it as a local storage/shipping area, then trying to maximize the land investment by maintaining a retail store there? I'm especially interested as my potential new position (waiting on my next set of interviews) is with a pretty large e-commerce site (listed in Internet Retailer's Top 500, along with DD) and it might be a good idea for "us" as expansion merits.

Indeed. I drove past the Naperville store today and noticed the large balloon advertisement for the new book.

It's a very small "misunderstanding" - NBD.

Our innocent little problem involves us timing the release of the book to the US Mail delivery of the book. We mailed the books early with BIG RED wrapping saying "DO NOT DELIVER UNTIL SATURDAY JULY 21" - so we shall smugly claim It's Not Our Fault!
