Dog mutilates sleeping infant in Waukegan
November 5, 2007
An infant boy's genitals were mutilated early Sunday when a dog at the Waukegan apartment where the child was sleeping chewed through the child's dirty diaper, police officials said Monday.
The 4-month-old awoke screaming after a dachshund owned by his father's girlfriend mutilated and ingested his genitals, police said.
The boy was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago and remained in stable condition Monday. Police declined to name the infant or his father.
No criminal charges have been filed. Waukegan police and the Lake County state's attorney's office are investigating. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has been notified.
The father's girlfriend heard the child screaming and called 911, police said. The boy was flown from the apartment to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He later was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital.
The dog was taken to the Animal Hospital, where a veterinarian hoped to recover the child's genitalia by performing surgery on the dachshund. A veterinarian determined that reattachment would not be possible.
The dachshund had no history of violence and remains in the custody of Waukegan Animal Control, police said.

1. Very sad.
2. Either the baby was sleeping on the floor or the dog was put in the crib, bed or wherever the kid was sleeping by someone. I don't know that dachshunds have mastered climbing.
