Post subject:  US Open Wagers

The Wagers Section is gone, so perhaps this is as good a place as any. The best golf tourney of the year is on at Winged Foot and there are some great wagering opportunities. Here are my plays, the current odds (all at Pinnaclesports.com) and the amount for each play as a % of the total amount I'm playing on the Open.

Tiger Woods to win +475 40%
We haven’t seen odds like this on Tiger in a major in several years. The best player in the world at these odds? Take. I think the layoff is being overblown. In two previous instances in which Tiger took long layoffs, he came back and won his first tourney back. John Cook has been playing with Tiger. Cook says the man is ON. Good enough for me.

Vijay Singh to finish in Top 10 +125 10%
Vijay hasn’t won a major in a long time, but he’s been in the top 10 each of the last eight majors. And he’s been in the hunt lately and showed he’s ready last week.

Ernie Els to finish in Top 12 +156 10%
The winner of this tourney will be strong, patient and will have a great short game. Els certainly fits the strong part. US Open rough requires a strong player to hit it out of the shit and advance it. Some people look to the straight hitters in the Open, but with fairways at 18-22 yards wide, everybody is going to be in the shit some times. And some of the trendy straight hitters don’t have the power to hit it in the shit and not lose a stroke automatically. Not the case with Ernie. Yeah his knees have been bad, but by all indications, he’s far along the comeback trail. The odds are generous and this great Majors player doesn’t even need to be in the last four groups on Sunday to cash this play.

David Toms to finish in Top 16 +126 10%
Ok Toms is the one straight hitter that I’ll take because he also has the power to thrash his way out of the rough. And he’s playing very well.

Stuart Appleby to win +6000 5%
Stuart Appleby -110 vs. Sergio Garcia, 1st Round 10%
This might be the value play of the tournament. Appleby is playing very well and he’s another “strong” player out of the rough. And while I don’t usually make one round bets, a match vs. Sergio is too attractive to pass by. Sergio could shoot 68 I suppose, but I think with his head and spotty play, he’s more likely to throw out a 78.

Geoff Ogilvy to win +7500 3%
Brett Quigley to win +12500 2%
Two guys with the power, decent short games and recent strong play that are worth a few sheckels for those looking for longshots.

Prediction: Winning score is between even par and 2 over and several of these guys are in the hunt.

I like the Toms bet. That's probably the best I'd make out of all of those.

Day One Review: Garcia shoots 78 and Appleby cashes that matchup. The Toms and Quigley bets are toast. And the Tiger bet may be toast by tonight. Singh and Els are in the mix for their bets, and if you bought a piece of longshots Appleby or Ogilvy, then the weekend will be interesting. I should have taken over 280-1/2 for the winning score. 4 or 5 over is going to win this thing. That means a lot of guys are in this. Whoever can shoot even on the weekend will be in the final groups.

Jesus Coast, you deserve serious recognition for this call. Picking a 75-1 shot is a great call.
