I realize i'm just asking for it from Frank......so no i'm not hiring the sunshine carpet cleaners

but does anyone have one that they recommend? or is the do-it-yourself things you rent at Jewel better?

i've never had it done in 5 years here...i don't see myself getting new carpet or hardwood flooring anytime soon and i'm hosting my first family holiday here for Easter, so i thought it would be a good time to have it done

do they move the furniture for you or do you have to do that?

I use the rental from da Jewels. It's cheap. Pay the extra $5 for the "wide track" - it will save you time. The soap is the expensive part, but it will last for several uses.

5 years is a long time.

Where are you located, Bagels? I have someone I would definitely recommend but the size of the job and how far they would have to travel could be a factor.

If someone here has a trustworthy guy, that's one thing. But carpet cleaning in general is a scam business. A friend of mine worked for an outfit when he was right out of high school. He has so many funny stories we've thought about writing a screenplay.

He worked for these two guys who basically just booked the appointments and dispatched the cleaners who had to rent the equipment and buy the supplies from them. They had to turn in the checks from the customers and were paid a ridiculously small percentage. My buddy quickly learned the ropes. Rather than paying for Scotchgard refills he performed the treatment with water only. Also, he offered the extra services for cash payments that he could keep off the contract and put straight into his pocket. Some shit he learned from the crusty old guys and other stuff he figured out for himself. Like I said, a scam business.

One of his funniest stories is about an Indian guy who refused to pay. He called the office to inform them that he couldn't collect and one of the managers told him to take the machine to the top of the stairs and empty the dirty water down the staircase. This was a bit much even for my friend. He asked his boss if he really should do that. The boss said he would pay him the commission from the job anyway and told him "DO IT!!!!" So he did. The Indian was jumping around screaming as the dirty water sloshed all over his carpet. My friend heard his boss on the phone yukking it up with the other guys in the office. "Joe just blackwatered a fuckin' Indian!"

Vent cleaning a scam,too?

I never had that done, but was just wondering.

We have all flooring in my house,,,,carpets sucked.

so because you know OF a company that scams people, the entire industry is a scam?

i do like to rent myself. makes the most sense, because its not hard work. i put half a cup of tide in it, and a tablespoon of TSP. works like magic. dont buy the proprietary carpet soap, its a ripoff. you already have soap in your laundry room.

vent cleaning? meh, not very often.. but it can help if you really want to get all the dust out of your house. even more effective, imo, is a strong air purifier. its just a fan blowing through a hepa filter, but if you have a big enough one they can soak up a lot of dust.

The vent cleaning itself does not have to be a scam. Simply someone taking a good vacuum hose and brush setup to your vents after years shouldn't hurt a thing. I was alluding to the guys doing the work coming up stuff on the own for a cash upgrade off contract. Example would be hit you for 40-50 bucks to use a squirt bottle of some nice smelling shit into each register opening to "seal" things in and "trap" future dirt.

When I bought new carpets in my last house, the carpet guy said to delay steam/wet cleaning them as long as possible. The combination of water and chemical's starts to degrade what ever the manufacturers put on them. Said to wait at least 5 years before doing it, even 10 and it won't hurt. It sounded like he was trying to get you to do it outside of the warranty window so there may be something to that.
