I got out 2 Saturdays ago. By the 7th hole, I took my fleece off and was just in a golf shirt. Looks like it will be at least another week before its warm enough for that again

Thanks for the tip, just got back from sports authority and wanted to check out prices on some iron sets. Do you guys still use steel irons or did you upgrade to graphite? I'm conflicted... |

I'm conflicted... Kinda depends on your swing speed as to whether or not a lot of the graphite shafts make sense for you. Also depends on if you want to hit the ball higher or lower. I've always stuck with steel shafts on my ironsthe almost 30 years I have been playing but that is just me. If you can get professionally fitted that would likely help. |

Depends. You'll get a bit more distance out of graphite shafts but you'll sacrifice some long term durability and a bit of feel. Graphite tends to be better for older players or players with a slower swing speed. Steel shafts are for players with higher swing speeds who want a bit more feel out of the irons. You'll feel the vibrations a lot more and be able to diagnose mishits easier. That's a very basic review and I'm sure the more esteemed golfers on the board can give a lot more info |

Unless you are 60 years old, you will be fine with steel shafts. T-Bone speaks the truth; depending on how high/low you want to hit the ball, most golfers can get away with steel shafts. Assuming you play most of your golf in the Midwest, you will want a pretty standard ball-flight as we don't really have abnormally wet or dry weather year-round. What you really want to focus more on is lie angle and shaft length for your height/swing plane. Finding the bottom of your swing arc is the most important key to good ballstriking. If your clubs are too short, you will top the ball; too long, and your divots will (likely) be behind the ball and cause you to lose distance. For best results, you want to make your divot just after the ball (hit ball first, then ground). This will compress the golf ball appropriately which translates to more distance, spin, and accuracy. |

That's a good point, that's what I should probably be focusing on... I have a comfortable shaft length(  ) but what lie angle or club would you suggest for distance accuracy? If that even has anything to do with that problem. If you don't mind me asking...

I just got a new set of Pings last weekend, and they didn't bother messing with the lie angle (dot system) cause I'm not consistent enough to get a real reading on what I need ( I have a terminal case of "baseball swing"). So I've just got standard lie for now, but from what I understand if I get my swing fixed and the lie needs a changin, Ping will do it at no charge. Unfortunately they don't make a club that makes you less bad at golf. |

While adjusting your lie angle may ultimately give you an increase in distance on your irons, this will be entirely due to better contact. Golfers have to remember that irons are meant to be hit the same distance every time (in theory), thus making them your "scoring clubs". If you are going to tinker with any club in your bag for distance/accuracy/trajectory, I would recommend making changes to your driver more than anything. You don't need your 8-iron to go 150 yards on one shot and 140 the next. What Hawg Ass says is also true; getting a proper fitting for your swing and game preferences is highly recommended. Most people will measure in the "standard" range, which is how all stock iron sets are designed off the rack. |

Thanks for the help from all of you, but I bought some Wilson's at play it again sports today. I got out of work early, and got impatient. I ended up getting a set, and took them straight to the driving range at Zigfield Troy on 75th street in Downers Grove to test them out, and I'm very happy with the purchase, despite the clubs being a little dirty... I'm getting my game on for the April golf outing... as long as I place better than Spanky, I'll be happy... |
