My dog has just been diagnosed with heartworms, despite being on prevention medication. Has anyone else been through this? What was the treatment/cost? (I would have put this in the Gen. Discussion section but I didn't want to interrupt the love-fest going on in the Juggs thread.) |

My dalmatian got it but he was already old and sickly. I believe he took some meds and they went away but he had heart problems for the rest of his life. |

A friend of a friend just had a pup go through this. It is not as bad as it used to be as there have been a lot of progress lately. It is pricey and takes a while, but if caught in time the prognosis is very good. Sorry to hear and good luck!! |

My younger dog was diagnosed a few years ago and we took care of it. She eventually beat it but you are going to have to keep the dog from running around too much while being treated because it can kill them. I didn't notice much difference and my dog is really active. Best of luck. Usually the heartworm preventative works well. My dog was a rescue who was living outside so nothing we could have done about it. |

Ours is a rescue too and we've had him for just about a year now. How did they treat it? It looks like there are shots and/or pills. |

She was treated with shots and made a full recovery. This was about 20 years ago, so the methods might be different these days. |

only know two people who had a dog get heart worm..and both pamper their dogs and keep them on heart worm meds year round..both dogs lived ..cost under 1,000 dollars for treatment and to be honest, you could not even tell either dog was infected...the hard part is that you have to crate your dog for a very long time if he is active..the dog can not get all amped up and excited ..they need to relax and rest while getting treatments and after 3-5 months the dog is fine. i have never given any of my dogs any heart worm pills ever it is a scam by vets..vets run many scams to make money..good luck. |

Not sure it is a scam but you are entitled to your opinion of course. My dogs are outside a lot in the summer either camping or going to the dog park so it is more of a piece of mind thing for me, although treating 2 large dogs with that and flea and tick stuff gets spendy. |

i am not saying all vets are scum..i think most vets genuinely like animals but not all...i see so many people get taken at vets by the vets performing tests for a few hundo here n there because they know the owner will pay...the mark up at a vet is insane...i give my dogs their shots ..same vaccines the vets use..sent to me in dry ice for roughly 1-3 dollars per vaccine ..anywhere from a 3 in one to a five in one...the only thing that i kinda worry about is parvo in the summer...but the vets charges what for that same vaccine? 50$ ? or maybe 80$ ..and they buy in bulk so they pay maybe 50 cents per vaccine and throw in an additional 40-50 dollars for a vet visit. |

I had a German Shepherd that got heartworms many years ago. I remember the treatment being fairly expensive. They held the dog at the clinic with a IV arsenic drip going into him for five days. He lived, but aged very quickly. His hair started turning gray almost immediately. |

I'm sorry to read about all your sick dogs. One of our best friends is a vet. I'm going to ask her about heartworm medication. I'm pretty sure of one thing. Your dog should be tested for heartworm BEFORE any medication is given to prevent heartworm. I think it could harm your pooch if that is the case. Good luck to everybody with your dogs! |

I would agree with your advice considering heartworm but some of us are getting dogs from god knows where and often the heartworm doesn't manifest itself until months down the line. In general I would agree with you Pasta. It can be expensive and debilatating. |

So we took our guy to a different vet (it was the vet we originally wanted to go to, but were were unable to get an appointment quickly). They ran a whole battery of tests and everything came back negative! I tend to believe them and their processes more than the first vet, but I have a feeling that more tests will be done to confirm or deny the results... |
