This just reminded me of the only time I ever had a "pizza" burger. At some diner across from LaGuardia in 1977 on a family trip. I probably ate it three times that week.

Oddly enough, they were so great, I've never remembered eating one since.

way back in the day we used to go to Hackney's over by Old Orchard there. Would get the burger rare on pumpernickel with raw onion and a little ketchup. So that's what I'll go with

1. Raw onion, white, sweet, and juicy.
2. Ketchup.

If you're talking about a frozen patty on the griddle, then by all means load it up with stuff to make it palatable.

I heard a few years back that ketchup actually clashes with red meat and should never be put on a burger. Here is an interview with a burger expert. I snipped out the part where he explains why. Since then I've tried to keep ketchup off all my burgers for the most part and have switched to a dab of mustard which is supposed to accentuate the meat.

The original burger place in the USA, the one in New haven Conn, they don't even serve ketcup. Burgers come with mustard and pickles.

So basically all you people putting ketchup on your burgers are tasteless dummies.

What’s the ultimate burger faux pas?

I think one of the biggest burger faux pas is to put ketchup on your burger, because ketchup is very sweet and it does not work with the beef like everybody thinks it does. It was introduced by some of the fast-food chains in the ‘50s to get kids interested in eating burgers. The original American hamburger only came with a few basic elements: mustard and pickles—and if you wanted onions, you got onions. Mustard and pickles were basically the only two condiments available on just about every burger in America.

Ketchup was not introduced until the ‘40s or ‘50s, and then an entire generation—my parents—grew up eating burgers with ketchup, and they passed it on to me, and I ate ketchup on my burger for many years. Then I had the original American hamburger, and I said no, ketchup doesn’t work at all. Mustard and vinegary pickles actually bring out beef-y flavor. Ketchup’s a huge mistake.
