Zippy's, home of the Cheesy Beef! Bode and Roselle. My cousins grew up around there, so I went there a lot. Terrific waffle fries. RIP

My all time favorite beef was Luke’s on 31 in Algonquin.

I think the place was condemned at some point but that was peak beef.

best I ever had was a place on taylor named vittori's. Vittori's sons were former michigan football players who also ran a book and drugs out of the storefront. They sampled too much of their product and after Vittori retired, the place soon shut down

Owner apparently opened a new spot called Beef Shack that has a few locations in western suburbs. Menu looks similar.

Other good spots were Suzy’s on Montrose, Jay’s on Narraganssett and Margie’s on Cicero (showing my age on that one).

Zippys was very good.

it is not the best beef in chicago or its suburbs. It's good enough but someone was just being contrarian to have made that choice.

I stopped at Portillo's on North Ave. in St. Charles tonight because I had a $25 gift card.

It wasn't great. I noticed they've changed up the bread where it is not as deep as it used to be, so they can put less beef it the sandwich. They couldn't even get my order right for extra peppers on my beef. They gave me two fucking peppers.

No crowds in the restaurant anymore at 4:30 p.m.

It was $26.50 for a beef combo with peppers, beef with peppers and a large fri. Totally ridiculous prices for an air sandwich.

I had one of the worst beef sandwiches I've ever had in my life at their Skokie location last weekend. This is the first time I've actually noticed a material dip in quality.

Was gonna post this. I've never been to Johnnys, but Bob-O's is the best beef I've had in Chicago. To top it off, they also have amazing hand cut fries.

Went to Jay’s for the first time in a while over the weekend. Still got it. They were even polite.

Portillo's is such a miserly organization. They send you a generous birthday special of a free piece of cake, if you make another purchase. Just give me the freaking piece of cake. The most likely scenario is that I'm buying something else if I go in, and they know that, so why not just give it?

Superdawg, which is a far superior product and a smaller business gives you a free sandwich with fries and any drink (including a shake). That has something like a $10-15 value and it is great for customer relations.

Spoken like someone who isn’t a Portillo’s shareholder.

i'll give Bunoa some credit, they have a pretty good rewards program . Today was a 5$ burger, it's no Au Cheval but for 5 it's solid .

they seem to have some deal almost every day .

i mean, it's baseline/average food...but again i think the beef itself it better than Portillo's (low bar i know ) and w/ the deals, its usually pretty cheap . I also appreciate the online ordering where they shove your bag in a cubby hole and you walk in and grab it in 2 seconds. No human interaction required .

Portillo's is introducing a limited breakfast menu on April 15th. What a better way to start the day than diabetes and a heart attack!

I wish I could see a side by side comparison of Portillo's chopped salad 20 years ago vs the same salad today. I bet today's salad has 70% less stuff in it other than lettuce.
