On the way there from the UC you probably pass 30-50 taco places that are better...and that's just on Ashland alone.

Used to live nearby and eat there like 2x/week. Horrifying, almost looked condemned, but fantastic.

To clarify, the place I like is

http://www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-san-juanito-chicago

Biggie, don't waste your time on the steak at this place. Its good, but every bite of steak is one less bite of the Pastor which is the clear star of the show.

Has anyone tried this place in Logan Square, L'Patron? Looks amazing and must be popular cause there's lots of talk of having to wait in line.

If you're in the northern suburbs and looking for a taco I highly recommend Taco Nano in Northfield about 50 feet west of the Edens Expressway at teh Willow Rd. exit.

Los Burritos Tapatios is really good. They have places in Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Lisle, Downers Grove, and maybe a few others.

Except they do the flour tortillas w/ lettuce and tomatoes on the tacos. Corn tortillas w/ cilantro and onions, motherfuckers!

I order them with onions and cilantro.

Well, shit. Are they open late, and do they cater to the impaired, and also, do they allow BYOB and if so what are they and where?
I don't remember how we got started on the El Presidente tradition.
Went there with Herbie and some board guys once, maybe FavreFan, IMU, Cookie... I might be forgetting someone.

Dude, every taco place caters to drunk people. That's like asking if New York Bagel and Bialy caters to jews.

Here's a random best taco list. At least half of the list are in between the UC and Diversey.

Also I heard there are a couple taco places around Ashland and Chicago that are really good, but I could be a tad off on the location.

Agreed. ONLY way to eat tacos is corn tortilla, onion and cilantro.

Going to a taco place and ordering it gringo style (lettuce & Tomato) is about as bad as going to Manny's and asking for mayo on your corned beef.

Tacos Erendira in Bridgeport at 3207 South Halsted is a great taco stand.
Check them out if you're in the neighborhood for a Sox game.

The flour, lettuce, tomato is standard fare for the gringos. Ask for them Mexican style, and you get corn, onions, and cilantro.

I don't have much for the Chicago area, but if you are ever in Long Beach, CA (I know...why would you be in the LBC? I was there for a conference last week), there is a place near downtown on Pacific Ave, called Cinco De Mayo. They had the best Mexican food I have had in years. The steak tacos were great everything was homemade and I caught a peek in the kitchen, it was a couple of Mexican grandmothers making everything....and cheap. I had a taco, burrito, chips and salsa and it was $6.00.

I am going to Monterey in Aprila nd LA in July. I will find good tacos. As for Chicago I doubt they are top of anyone's list but when there I always hit my old joint El Gallo de Oro on 63rd street.

25th & Whipple - La Chapparita. Al pastor with pineapple - these are quite good. The cabeza tacos are to die for.

International Supermarket - 47th & Ashland - excellent.

El Cabrito - 1659 W 47th St. We had a group lunch there one day - everyone raved about it.

Chicks N Salsa - already mentioned - yeah, the carnitas are really good.

La Rosita on North in Glendale Heights - oh come on, were you serious about this one? That taqueria is a shithole.

Fruit Market - Addison on North Avenue at Addison Road - $1 tacos and they're really good. Better if you can eat them there though.

Herradura - Addison Road just north of North Avenue, in Addison. This is the best damn place around. They have cabeza, labios and a few other goodies that Big Fan does not want in this thread - but the food here is amazing. Carryouts on Sunday morning are insane.

The café in the basement of the CBOT recently opened a taqueria that has the best pork carnitas tacos I've ever had. They also have great chips and guac.

Years ago my favorite taco joint was Taco Burrito Express on Halsted and Lill. The place was disgusting (one time they let me walk from the alley parking, through the back door and kitchen to the seating area, and I almost threw up), but the tacos and chorizo/eggs were outstanding.

Not only does this place have good tacos, but damn good chips and salsa as well. Some may say the chips are too greasy but I call those people cowards.
