Popeye's is pretty good.

I used to like Church's Chicken when we had it in Arlington.

Browns had a killer recipe.

Yeah, but it was exclusive to the Palatine location.

I like Popeye's but the lack of Cajun rice will definitely affect how often I go there. I may as well go to Jollibee which is just as good, although my beef with them is that you can only get the traditional Filipino garlic rice at breakfast time. I miss the Church's that was at Howard and Damen. It was replaced by the worst Popeye's in the world. I'd rather just hit Tasty Sub across the street and grab some wings.

Daisy's Po Boys recently opened in Hyde Park and is pretty good. But it's not Cajun but rather Creole. There probably are so few because the places stupidly think that all the food has to be hot and overly spicy instead of balanced.

Fwiw, Chuck's always disappointed me. I never understood what kind of food they wanted to serve. It always seemed to have one foot in a cuisine and the other somewhere else. Not bad per se, just kind of confused.

Heaven on Seven is closed.

Ina Mae's is a fairly new one that seemed good

What I see here is a failure to communicate what we are. It's called "call to action". When I see a pig on the sign, I think I'm going to get BBQ. But then I see nachos and enchiladas on the menu. What it projects from the outside, it doesn't deliver. My spy Spaulding went in and hated her food. If we want to be successful we have to create a female friendly environment. This place has failed to deliver in every possible way, and I don't have much time to turn this around before we're done.

I stopped in a few weeks ago when I was in town. I had the least creole Stuffed Peppers ever. They were tasty, but they didn't seem that much different than what my definitely not Creole aunt used to make. Their fancier salad with grilled shrimp is still killer, however.

They were also not at all busy on a Saturday night. Not a good sign that they will survive the winter.

When I lived down the road, I would go for their Mexican dishes (Chuck had worked for Bayless for a while), their excellent soups, and Saturday breakfast. But they cut the Mexican items a couple of years ago and with not being busy they cut the number of soups.

yea i imagine it's a hard balance

they certainly did cut back on the specials, which were very interesting and not the norm for most places in the area

during Covid times it was basically the BBQ, burgers, sandwiches, etc. so IMO lost a lot of what made them special

I'll never argue that their BBQ is top notch- it's solid and passable- but not anywhere near top tier

oh I forgot Pappadeuax
but that's another one, last time i looked at their menu like half of it was gone
I'm sure places are streamlining things a lot these days

It's not that good but it isn't horrendous.

Heaven on Seven is closed for sure. My favorite restaurant.

The Purple Pig still has some stuff. I think Jimmy does 1 day/week doing cajun stuff.

Reader - Zatarain's? Really!??! Disappointing.

Chucks, here's a tip, get the Jambalaya and the Habanero Soup daily special. Get some extra chicken or your preference and pour the habanero soup into the Jambalaya. It's pretty good.

There is nothing more of a waste of time to me than making rice. And that's coming from someone who takes 4-5 hours to make gumbo and at least an hour making barbecue shrimp.

Plus I'm not the world's biggest fan of dirty rice. It's just ok.

No, Zack has Cajun roots that makes him more qualified in this matter.

Get yourself a rice cooker rinse it out a few times to get the weird stuff off it and set the timer.

It's not rocket surgery. Even an Irish guy can do it.

I've thought about that, but since I don't cook nearly as much as before, I don't eat enough rice to take up the kitchen space. Go figure.

I'm more of a noodle guy myself. Which my takeout guy commented on years ago.

Zatarrans yellow rice is good. I usually serve it with tacos/burritos/fajitas. The left overs get mixed with bell peppers onion peas can of tomatoes maybe a handful or 2 of some green sausage and shrimp as a casserole.

Noisy do you serve chili with rice?

No. I like chili with cornbread or just get the Scoop Fritos if I don't have time to make cornbread.

Cornbread is excellent with etouffee also. I prefer that to rice but rice is still good with that.

It's too sweet isn't it? Mrs Dr. Ken likes it.

When she was pregnant, I was making frequent late-night runs to Steak N Shake to get chili 5-way. I think that is as close we can get to Skyline around here.

I don't mean that thin Cincinnati Chili with the cinnamon and cocoa flavor (ie Skyline). I'm talking about standard chili, but on top of spaghetti with cheese, onions, sour cream, etc.

Im not a big fan of Skyline style, because it just is a poor man's watery version of pasticcio without the bechamel. But putting a real Texas or New Mexico style chili on fat Greek-style macaroni (preferably without beans) with a high quality cheddar is pretty good.

So long as it has no beans, good by me.

Tried the new blackened chicken sandwich

Not a big fan
Was a tiny bit on the rubbery side so maybe it just wasn’t cooked well. But the seasoning wasn’t notable either . Thumbs down from me . Stick with the OG
