So we lost our 1 and only set of keys to a Ford Edge. I've called 2 dealerships and both places have said the same thing. You have to tow the car to the dealership, and then it will be 400 for new keys. Breaks down to 145 bucks per key (required to have 2 made with the new technology in the keys), plus an hour of shop time for a total of 400 dollars + towing.

Fuck this. Went on ebay and you can buy the key fobs for 20 bucks a piece. The ebay store actually sells out of Spring Grove. They gave me the name of a locksmith local to spring grove who will pick up the keys for me, and drive to my house to cut and program them for 175, and that's for 3 keys.

Important lesson, don't lose your fucking keys.

Id say its more fuck you car dealers getting away with raping the fucking car owner . $400 plus a fucking tow? any reason they just cant drive out to where your car is and cut the fucking key like a locksmith does for half the price?

I lost a set of keys a few years back, and it is very expensive. The Pontiac dealer told me that those key fobs have anti-theft technology. The base devices are expensive and then need to be programmed to match one another. I just needed one set, and I think it was around $100, and this was seven years ago.

Even more with the rape, they don't ever need the car to make the key. The VIN gives them the key pattern, they just need the car to bind the key to it.

Some other bullshit I don't understand fully is if you wanted to create a spare key, you need to have 2 sets already to do it yourself. So if you lost one, you are fucked over without a lock smith or a dealership. The reasoning they said is it prevents a valet from replicating a key when the car is in their protection.

This is going to be something I remember when I buy my next new car. You can probably negotiate with the dealership to throw in an extra couple sets of keys at no charge, This is obviously something they are gouging consumers on so they can make a few extra bucks. The cost to the dealership itself is probably minimal.

Both of my cars are over 10 years old so still can go to hardware store for copies.

PUDDY: (While punching up numbers on a calculator) PUDDY: I just left out a couple of things, rust-proofing..

JERRY: "Rust-proofing"?

PUDDY: Transport charge, storage surcharge, additional overcharge, finder’s fee

JERRY: "Finder’s fee"? It was on the lot!

PUDDY: Yeah, that’s right. Floor mats, keys..

JERRY: ‘Keys"?!

PUDDY: How ya gonna start it?

George: What do they look like?

Jerry: Keys, George. They look like keys.

Doesn't surprise me at all....I got a Mercury Mountaineer, and it did not come with the keyless entry, and the dealership wants to charge you $50, when you can go on ebay and buy one for $5 and easily program it yourself.

Count me in for this. I guess it was common knowledge...

I would have just threw a Molitov Cocktail thru the windshield and collected the ins money.

Yeah, I've done with my last two cars....it usually involves some kind of thing where you move the key back and forth in the ignition a bunch of times within a 10 second period.

And like a lot of Ford products, I have that 5 digit code by the handle, too.....but if you lock them in car and the battery is drained....good luck.
