Assuming you lost your job and had no family members to rely on.

I suppose I could always subject myself to the cruel, degrading whims of elderly perverted dowagers.

You can probably live in the backseat of your self-driving car by then.

That would make it easier to see all the boring parts of American between New York and California.

I have no problem when a liberal with a huge heart like yourself squats in a property for years. I just want to make sure that that dynamic is not included in the responses of conservative board members. I am sure Scorehead and 24_Guy would immediately vacate the premises upon failing to make prompt payment.

They are closer to the poor class than the ultra rich. In monetary terms.

Whoa. Maybe your just joking, but if not, this is getting out of hand. I'm trying to recall - I'm sure I said something about it being morally wrong to take out a loan and not pay it back. I'll stand by that. Now, if I found myself in dire straits, would I throw on a hair shirt and voluntarily live on the street? No. Just like I might steal a loaf of bread if I was starving; that does not mean I tacitly approve of theft in general.

As far as lumping me in with Scorehead - I think your argument with him as that he doesn't acknowledge that successful people almost always had advantages. That's not my belief at all, and you won't find one post from me saying anything of the kind. My beef in these threads is with the pitchfork crowd that think tearing down the top is the only answer. I want to build up the bottom instead. I just think that's a better approach and is more likely to work.

Hope this clarifies things a bit.

Are you talking about full emergency situation of liquidating everything including retirement funds?

I think I would be doing some bailing before it ever got to that: Cut spending, move kids to public school, sell assets. I figure I could sell the house and have enough equity to pay at least for a condo. All I would have to pay for at that point is food for the family. Under this scenario I am probably homeless proof.

However, if you are talking real emergency, like a drug addiction coupled with a divorce coupled with a great depression than I am as susceptible to homelessness as anyone.

Everything is possible but I just couldn't see it happening. It would likely mean a lot of bad things happened all at once or somehow I mentally lost it. This is with me being just about certain I wouldn't get any help from my family.
