Well, I'm saying we don't prosecute them like we should. Lots of guys with 3 DUI's who are still out there.

I have a couple people in my family over 3. A night in jail and a one year suspended license is about as bad as the punishment ever was. This was probably 10 years ago though. I hope they are more strict now.

Seatbelts keep less people from dying or being seriously injured in accidents. Which in turn means less time and resources used by law enforcement and fire departments. Which probably saves us all money in the long run. If there were no seat belts my guess is we would also need more ambulances and workers. Not to mention Car Insurance prices would probably go up.

I would implore Phil McCracken to take a stand against seat belts

SIDE NOTE

Tracy Morgan's accident brought up the topic of travelling in a non traditional vehicle (Like a big ass limo or a party bus) and not wearing the belt and actually standing and how dangerous that is

Never considered that much on the drunken bus trips ive been on where people are jumping around like Hank and Jorr in a 70's porn museum

what difference does the checkpoint make ? in any case, what do you feel the punishment should be ?
A person who gets caught at a checkpoint may not have been doing anything out of the ordinary. They weren't caught doing something dangerous. Now, they may have been driving erratically but they may not have. Someone who is pulled over likely did something that would cause you to feel they are driving recklessly. I understand that isn't always true.

The penalties for one dui may be acceptable. I don't really know enough about them. I know there are way too many people with multiple dui arrests/convictions and penalties should be more severe.

Repeat drunken driver Leslie Thurow walked out of Cook County Jail last Thursday night with orders to stay off the roads and report to probation.

But on Tuesday she was in Cook County Jail again, this time without bail after being accused of disregarding the judge's orders within 48 hours of receiving them and wreaking havoc on a stretch of the Tri-State Tollway near Elmhurst on Saturday afternoon.

Thurow's history reveals the struggles authorities face in keeping chronic drunken drivers off the roads. Her release last week came after she had spent more than three months in jail for a drunken driving crash in May in Brookfield.

Police say it was her third drunken crash in nine months, and one area chief expressed frustration with a judicial system that he said is too lenient on repeat offenders.

Even adding treatment to the punishment may not be enough, the record indicates. Court documents trace Thurow's drunken driving to 2008, and authorities indicate she received treatment for alcohol abuse during her most recent stint in jail before last week's release.

"You can't control what people are going to do," said Rita Kreslin, executive director of the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists. "You keep throwing them in jail and, OK, it gets them off the road … (but) it doesn't solve the problem. Getting them treatment is definitely the answer."

The crashes Saturday may be Thurow's most harrowing. Thurow, 59, of Mount Prospect, allegedly was driving drunk when she struck Illinois State Trooper Michael Cokins, 28, who was conducting a traffic stop on the northbound shoulder of I-294 near Elmhurst.

Authorities say she continued on the tollway and struck a retaining wall. She then drove about 2 miles along the interstate, hitting an SUV with seven occupants, including a 3-year-old boy, causing the SUV to flip. Thurow's car struck a median.

By the time it came to a rest, her vehicle had spun 180 degrees and was facing south.

Cokins, who'd joined the state police eight months ago, "remains hospitalized and is stable," Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Tuesday. "We're just hopeful his condition improves day by day."

The conditions of the SUV occupants were unclear, although Bond indicated they were taken to area hospitals for observation, then released.

Yup. That's why I don't see any other protective measures being taken until self driving cars fix the problem for good.

Chucks (restaurant in Burbank that has been mentioned here before) had a Sox game outing a few years back i attended....basically they drove you in a bus to the game and provided beer (miller lite and the ilk) and a BBQ buffet in the parking lot once you go there

i foolishly though the "bus" would be a party bus when in fact it was a school bus. further, while of course i participated, i was pretty surprised that they allowed drinking on the bus and even provided coolers of beer....so you have jam packed school bus full of adults, drinking liquor. half of them standing up at any given time. it was certainly....something

Yeah. The second an adult gets in a limo, party bus etc. we all just forget that we are still on the road. Its just boozing and grab assing and letting someone else take care of our lives.   All responsibility is lost... But its fun!

The school bus seatbelt issue is madness. Load up a bunch of unruly kids, give them one adult to supervise them, make the adult drive a gigantic vehicle AND have to watch kids in a big ass mirror. What could possibly go wrong?

Sounds like a CSFMB field trip.

According to the internet the buses are designed to handle it without. The issue is that getting the seatbelt off of 40 kids would be almost impossible in a situation where they need to evacuate. That is why the seats are so high.

Basically, you aren't going into a windshield in a crash on a school bus.

However, another article says that it was determined that it was too expensive as it would have cost $32 million to install them in Alabama and it would only have saved one life so who knows?

I remember my days from grade school where we would get the occasional bus that had seat belts. My friends would buckle the belts between the aisle and trip unsuspecting people walking to get off the bus.

I was a terrible child...

I think BRick is overstating the vehicle-control aspect of seatbelts. If you slam on the brakes, the brakes are the main input that is controlling the vehicle at that point, not the steering wheel. Also, slamming on the brakes doesn't generally "stop" the vehicle to the extent that you aren't still in position to drive. Maybe if the brakes scrubbed off speed sooner, but that hasn't been my experience.

Guy I work with just got his 3rd about a year ago. He spent 5 days in jail. Not only did he get a dui his last time, he wrapped his car around a tree, totaling it.
