They won't though. It's going to be hard to convince anyone over the age of 40 that loan forgiveness is a good idea since they likely have either paid them off already, never took them, or just think it would be unfair to give "free money" to people.

A lot of those people will have kids or grandchildren that are in college or that went to college. They will see the benefit in not having over $100k in debt.
That isn't likely to matter much and will be counteracted by the huge number of people who would be losers in that decision.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffreydorfman/2014/07/03/the-student-debt-crisis-is-being-manufactured-to-justify-debt-forgiveness/

Only 4% of households have student loan debt of $36k per adult and a lot of those people are going to be able to pay it back without much issue. Mom and Grandma are more likely to think how unfair it is that their kid got $15k wiped off while the family that funded 100% of college on student loans got $150k wiped off.

Schools struggle to get a tax increase put into place that would raise taxes $50 a year and yet we think there is support for basically giving college educated people billions of dollars?

As a country we better find a way to reduce or eliminate the cost of higher education or we are going to continue to fall behind.

The only real answer is "stop poor people from going".

Are you guys actually saying studying geography and history are "worthless"? If a guy wants to learn a trade he should go to trade school. If he wants to learn business he should get a job.

No. They just aren't a good value currently.

...or they could pick a major with solid job prospects.

Cut the cost of public universities through the governing process. People will run to those schools regardless of quality, as they do even now. Private universities will have to follow suit or die.

A history degree from a solid college is probably worth it. Better than being an employed idiot.

i'm not saying they are worthless but if you go for a degree like that and saddle yourself with 30K worth of debt, you should probably realize at some point that your prospects of paying that debt back at any point in your life are pretty small

then stop "school sharks". we have laws against loan sharks, why not include the schools that accept those toxic loans? oh wait, it wouldnt work because we would just put them on tv and praise them every friday at 8pm
