Now that's what I call fast track! I try to do a little less than the average guy each day.

I understand that mindset. I don't agree with it.

Sure I want my kids to be self sufficient. I also think it would be cool to take them on a vacation, maybe with their kids, when I'm an old fart.

Interesting to always see all these retired teachers who still come in and work their 100 days allowed or go to a Catholic and work full time. Very few seem to be able to just walk away and do nothing.

you can retire a profession; i don't think you can retire a vocation.

The future Mrs kind of said the same thing.
There's somewhere in the middle. I will still work and need to make money, but I simply want to downsize my home and lose the commute. I'm certainly not delusional that life will still cost money, but right now I get the pleasure of bankrolling 2 kids and an ex-wife. I intentionally live in an area with higher taxes and a more expensive house than we'll need. Once my youngest is on his own, my obligations will reduce quite a bit and I should be able to find a happy medium.

Before hitting the corporate world I was a HS teacher. Kids are a PITA but honestly it's something I would enjoy doing for the final stretch of my work life.

Yep. After a job layoff scare combined with the 2008 economic tank and Obama becoming president (so the spectre of no more pre-existing conditions for individual health insurance), I sat down and planned out what I'd need to do to be able to retire in a decade. I decided I had to be able to live on 30% of gross salary plus job-related expenses (downtown parking, gas to work, dry cleaning, etc.) if I was going to enjoy being semi-retired.

I don't completely hold to that, but I come close. And now that my parents aren't doing well health-wise, I'm able to spend another 30% of my paycheck on taking care of them. I'm not saving anything right now beyond my 401k, but I'm not losing ground towards retirement either.

I got a report today that a kid needs braces. Add another couple of years onto my projection.

One down. #2 gets his in about 1 year. I've already factored that in.

I don't even think about such things. I'll be happy to live that long.

That is ballsy considering the most expensive 4 years are the four years after a child graduates high school.

I guess I will have to slum it on booze from Costco.

I'm not going to stop working completely at that age, but I can't imagine hanging duct 40 hours per week at that age. My body is already breaking down, as 40 rapidly approaches. I will go back when my kids go to school full time, but by the time I hit my mid 50's, I will retire from sheet metal, and find an easy part time job to take. Something to get out of the house.
