Too bad Ryno's Wife & Irish Boy aren't around to laugh at this one.

I didn't mention a Mag-Lite ...

IB's mashed potatoes could only wish...

Talk about a potato famine ...

I'm still disturbed by the episode where someone attempted to rape Edith. That was rough and they told jokes. You don't get that out of today's sit coms

Other factors are you not being able to get it up based the amount of whiskey you have drank thru the day.

that is probably the worst All in the family episode . but the caveat is it is a later season episode, and once Mike & Gloria moved out, the show jumped the shark so everything after that pretty much sucks anyways. There's a few decent ones here and there but for the most part, bad. But that episode is beyond bad

I give them an A for trying to do something creative. The show stayed edgy.

I was too young to determine jump the shark moments but I always hated Stephanie from the moment they brought her in.

Edith dying seems to be the stepping off point for the show.

Much of that episode was powerful...until the message started driving the storyline.

I dated one of these, once upon a time. The novelty wears off after a while. I look back now and still am baffled how it's even possible. Yes...it does get really messy.

I've only been married for 2 weeks. We have 5 kids between the two of us ages 15-22. Still averaging 3-4 a week.

I never could really watch after "Edith" died.

Oddly I remember that the reason she gave for her leaving was that her gender politics were too liberal for the show(no expansion of her role)?

I was actually trying to find that last week....when I was a kid, I saw her interviewed, and I thought she was critical of the Edith role, but I was only about ten, so who knows. However, I looked around a bit and didn't find much. Interesting, though. I'm laid-off for the summer, so I may check this out.

When I was a kid, Archie scared the shit out of me. He was a kinder version of my dad. I was a little freaked out when I learned he wasn't Catholic, though. I assumed he was, like half the people in my parish, Irish-Catholic!

Fwiw, Wikipedia cites his funeral as having been held in a Catholic church. I always figured that his character was old school Bridgeport, but that personally he himself was more like Fahey Flynn and Joel Daly.

Excuse my ignorance but your jump the shark reference wouldn't be to the Happy Day's episode, would it?

How come the episode of Edith dying is never shown in the reruns?

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've seen the first dead Edith (after the fact) show in 25 years, if even then.

As for why no big lingering show, it was probably because she left after the season & couldn't agree to a new deal. Then as now, no contract meant a ham handed quick write off for your "former" character. $$$

I guess they're the ones who don't like bagpipe "music"

I don't think that happened on All In The Family, I believe they killed off her character after the first season of Archie Bunker's Place.
