OJ isn't a sports scandal. It's a scandal involving a sports figure.

Sports scandals have to affect sports.

1919 is obviously the GOAT of this discussion, nothing else even comes close to throwing the biggest sporting event (at the time) in the USA.

Did OJ cheat at football? Why didn't you go after Ugie the way you did Drake?
Because OJ committed a crime. He probably murdered two people as well. Woods lied and cheated on his wife, which might be against the Ten Commandments but its not illegal and its not even close to throwing a World Series or having umpteen cycling awards stripped from a known juicer.

OJ hadn't played in like 20 years. he was better known as a 2nd rate actor by then.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I assume it means he was offering his players if the Sox won the pennant and were going to face the NL in the World Series. At the time the Sox were in a heated pennant race with Cleveland and the Yankees. After the Sox players were suspended Cleveland took the AL.

One thing that doesn't get much play is that the event that brought the heat down on MLB at the time was a bad game in August between the Cubs and I think the Phillies that was so obviously fixed that people started flipping out.

Here's the box from that Cub game. You can't really tell much from it, but I have to believe the suspected culprits were Herzog and Flack, two guys who had less than stellar reputations.

To JORRs (correct) statement, a page or so I was able to lift from a book called "The Federal League of Base Ball Clubs: The History of an Outlaw Major League, 1914-1915":

(as an aside, a nice, quick primer on the short-lived but important Federal League: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_League)

Thank you shakes.

It concerns me that you are the voice of reason for us though.

Aren't there a ton of stories out about how crooked the 1918 World Series was, too?

Yeah, there was a lot of gambling throughout baseball at the time. There's little doubt the Cubs threw the '18 Series too. Max Flack's specialty was getting picked off whenever he got on.

So was Podsednek's

  Yeah, but he wasn't doing it on purpose.

I do think Tiger's scandal opened the door to cover sports stars in a different way. OJ was long retired during his scandal, yet Tiger was in the late-prime of his active career. But then he started sticking things places and the media didn't care.

I don't know how anything was a bigger scandal in sports that started with Cubbie management through 1947.

Like OJ, this is not necessarily a sports scandal, but we also have to include Michael Vick's dog-fighting in the discussion.

Lance Armstrong has to be in the top 5. yes, cycling is an afterthought but Lance was an International celebrity that turned out to be a fraud. Kind of a big deal.

armstrong pretty much single handedly ruined "Dodgeball", an otherwise pretty funny movie. it's still tainted by his ball-less legacy.

Yeah. Looking back, that's actually a pretty amazing accomplishment. I don't know how that didn't hurt the league significantly more.
