Oh goodness I have been faced with this so many times from my reports. Assuming you wish to stay at your current job, you should just be upfront and honest and be prepared to answer the question, "how much will it take for you to stay?"

Most bosses are pretty lazy, and their biggest worry is having to pick up your workload and spend time trying to replace you. As such, they really aren't worried about you as much as worrying about trying to replace you. It's just human nature.

You don't even need to have another job lined up. Just try to figure out what your worth in the marketplace from people in similar roles at your competitors. Arm yourself with that data.

This, kind of.

I'd rather stick with an average employee who is honest and has a good disposition than take my chances with the general pool of "talent" out there. I have had so many hires based upon good interviews and resumes that were shockingly bad that I appreciate the good. Also, a few dollars is not going to impact my bottom line to any great extent. There is a point though where a person prices themselves out of a market and the demand for increased benefits may be more expensive than salary.

You hit it on the head. Any time you hire, you are rolling the dice. The current employee is a known quantity and is already trained. We almost always counter offer.

There are a few problems with threatening your current company with a different job. They may start looking to replace you. They likely would consider it a sign that you may not be a long term employee. There really wouldn't be anything stopping them from giving you extra money/benefits and then working on replacing you.

In my opinion, this is the way to go about it. Before even applying for other jobs, simply ask for a raise with a valid explanation as to why you deserve it. If you get it then that is great. If not, apply for other places with the idea that if you like that place and the offer is better then you are going there. After you have been offered and accepted the job, give your notice and if they ask explain why. This is vital as it is much different to say "I was offered another job" vs. "I am taking another job". After this, the company will either say "Ok, we can't beat that" or they may try and do it. If you trust the company and they surpass the offer then staying would be fine even with the concerns I mentioned at the start.

I actually quit my job using roughly this same formula and they came back to me 6 weeks afterwards with an offer that significantly beat the company I left for. There is no chance that happens if I had simply threatened to leave.

I can tell you from an employer perspective, you are spot on Rick. I actually advise my best employees to let me know if they are ever thinking of leaving. It is a lot easier discussion before they walk in and quit.

I work 2nd shift. The future Mrs. Spiracy does as well.

There are rumors at her job (from union steward brown nosers)that the 2nd shift at her building may be eliminated. This speculation has been going on for quite some time.

There is a chance I could move/be moved to days myself. Question for the group is do I jump back to days and be proactive OR stay on 2nd shift and wait for her to move?

For the record, she does make more money and is much more stable for her career path.

Good advice and this is an approach I've tried in the past with success.

To add context to my current situation, another branch of our company actually reached out to me with the ol' "We want you to work for us, come back with a title and a number and we can talk." I have absolutely no intention of working in that division, but I view this as a possibility to leverage my current position and performance.

Well you've got options there.

"I've got this opportunity over here, but I really prefer to stay where I am at. I'd like to make this an easy decision to stay. If you could give me XYZ, then it's a no brainer to stay where I'm at."
