I forgot the name of the book but there's even more to that than just knowing.

We had broke the Naval Japanese code in 1940. We had ships out in the pacific who saw the Japanese fleet. The Japs even saw us and were surprised we didnt do anything. The Jap zero's said they were so surprised how nicely our ships were lined up for them to bomb. So we let the Japs do a salvage mission of our ships during the whole attack.

Sadly most of those sailors who died were like 13/14/15 year old kids. 16 was the age to get into the Navy back then and many of those kids lied about their age when they were younger than 16. I wish I had the name of that book.

It is a little fishy that all the fleet carriers the American Navy would rely on to turn the tide in the Pacific were nowhere near Pearl at the time of the attack. Official doctrine of the time still considered battleships more important but after the Bismarck was done in by the Ark Royal I do wonder if Navy leadership had kinda seen where naval warfare was headed. The Japanese definitely did.
