My condo building is going to get bulk TV and internet. Anyone else do this or hear of this? It's a pretty sweet deal. A company is going to come in and wire our building with Ethernet and wifi and put a antenna on our roof. With the bulk pricing we can get as much as 1000Mbps for $53.00 per month per unit. For TV we are getting a big Diretv dish on the roof which will connect to every unit. For $40 per month everyone will get HD, DVR and the basic 175 channel set up. Then you can individually upgrade your packages to include any additional channels or features you want, but you won't get those at the bulk price.

We're going to put these charges on our assessments going forward (except for individual unit upgrades beyond bulk) and the savings are pretty impressive. I'm paying $120 now for 75 MBps. And I already have DTV and it costs me around $175 per month.

We were able to find companies that would do this despite our building only having 25 unit. My monthly cost is going to go from around $300 per month to around $110.

This seems like an interesting way for these companies to prevent "cord-cutting". They lock in the entire building at an acceptable rate, and DirectTV preserves that revenue for years to come.

yeah, it's a win-win for the consumer and the provider.

yea, we're locked in to a 5 year contract with a max 5% yearly price increase.

Should be a nice selling point when I try and get rid of my condo. Letting potential owners that our assessments (which are already very reasonable) includes wireless internet and DTV at those prices could be the cherry on top that tips them towards buying.

It's almost as if they could prevent cord cutting by offering TV and Internet at a reasonable rate to all customers.

Yep. Maybe the market mult might come along and make a comment on that. He might be at the airport going to Vegas though.

Along similar lines, I need some advice from you tech gurus...

A new company came and installed fiber optic cables in our neighborhood. They came by the other day and offered the same services as Comcast at half the price and way faster internet speed.

Is there a downside to switching? Is their service going to be horrible?

What's the name of the company? I worked for a place that "specialized" in internet and cable (Direct TV), and it was a horribly run company that pissed more people off than those who got what they paid for.

My wife's parents have something like this and it's pretty awesome. Faster internet than I can get and cheaper too. Score one for living in the city. After taking 50 losses in a row the city was due.

The city is better than the Cleveland Browns

Any new service will have some early technical issues but in general fiber optic is going to be better than anything any other service. The funny thing is that in a lot of places as soon as these services pop up Comcast suddenly finds a way to increase the speed dramatically with no price increase! It's almost as if they could have done that all along.

God bless competition.

Do you think I should give it a try?

Do a quick google search on the company name and make sure it isn't like "TERRIBLE SERVICE. CUSTOMER SUPPORT STABBED ME. I ORDERED SHRIMP EVEN THOUGH I DON'T LIKE SHRIMP SO I DIDN'T LIKE MY MEAL".

If there aren't major red flags I would switch without question.

cable companies are approaching HOA's as it is and locking in exclusive rights agreements for pennies... short sighted HOA members are taking money up front and screwing over their membership

It's a great deal for current subscribed customers. It's a terrible deal for non-subscribers as they are forced to pay whether they want the service or not. These poor schmucks won't get any sympathy from me.

I worked for a company that did this exact thing at the Hancock building. We put a direct tv dish on the roof, and ran risers to all residential floors. Interesting note I was on the 16th floor wiring up a mux for this system when I was watching CNN on a monitor on 9/11. Was just getting started around 7a that day. Such a strange time to be in that building.
Anyway a few months later 134 had come in and cut our main feed because I pulled the riser and I wasn't union at the time. Whole building went dark and it took us almost a full day to find the cut. Not just one snip mind you... about 10 total. Cute.
Anyway once we got that all sorted out it seemed to work ok... although you can really only split a signal so many times before you're adding boosters and ultimately losing fidelity in my opinion.

We have a vacation/rental place in Florida, and when we first bought it, the entire HOA had cable/internet through one company. We were paying less than $40/month, and it included some premium channels (think HBO and Showtime???). Eventually, enough people wanted satellite, or decided they wanted no TV, and the plan was voted out by association. Now we pay over $100/month for basic services and upgrade the TV package when we are staying there are have it rented.
