I'll take a thread change to Craziest Way to Die, Alex. Depending on where in the brain the straw stuck it might not have even been too painful. Still think burning to death or drowning would be worse. .02

Sounds painless/instantaneous. I'd imagine a lifetime of smoking capped by a year of slowly asphyxiating as cancer destroys one's lungs and praying for premature death would be pretty shite. And yet many fork over $5000 a year in anticipation of the privilege.

Mythbusters did a show where they tested a form of Chinese torture where a person is placed over some bamboo seedlings and the bamboo is stiff enough to pierce their body and grow right through them at a rate of about an inch an hour.

Some hemorrhagic fevers (like ebola) can cause this. Richard Preston wrote a book called "The Hot Zone" where he describes in detail how ebola tears through someone's body. I'll quote the last bit, but for context, this guy has been violently bleeding out into his stomach for hours, the connective tissue of his face is dissolving so his skin sags from his skull, and his blood is full of so many clots that he's having strokes in every part of his body. His brain is so fried that he's "depersonalized" and is basically inhuman. Here's the last part where he finally dies in the hospital.

"Monet (the guy with ebola) maintains silence, waiting to receive attention. Suddenly he goes into the last phase-the human virus bomb explodes. Military biohazard specialists have ways of describing this occurrence. They say that the victim has 'crashed and bled out.' Or more politely they say that the victim has 'gone down.'
