I had to look it up, but it was a 1987 LeBaron GTS Hatchback, with a skull crushing 100hp turbo I4. I managed to put 120k on it in 7 years even through I lived only 5 miles from graduate school.
I didn't have classes at that point, so most of that was on long drives either going to go play cheap afternoon golf, listening to Steve and Garry or Chet, or some combination of the three.

My great aunt was so annoyed about my previous car which I had inherited from my parents (an 82 Century that was a real money pit) that she gave me half the price of the LeBaron as an early inheritance because she was turning 80. Then my dad co-signed with me for the remainder, financed at a lovely 9%.

I had an '83 Monte Carlo with what I think was a 265 cubic inch V-8 engine. It only put out 110 hp. The front seat was a bench. It was destroyed by that Shell Station on Rte 72 near Woodfield where you used to get a free car wash with tank fill up. The brush fell off while I was in the car wash, and it acted like a can opener down the passenger side of my car. Prom night too.

It's crazy how just about every modern four cylinder engine puts out more horsepower than a 40 year old V8.

I think about that all the time. I had an 84 Camera with a 305 that put out about 175. My Audi S4 was a six cylinder putting out 333, and my current ride (queue humbleboy) is an F Pace SVR with 550 and gets up to 60 in under four seconds as an SUV.

When they tightened the CAFE standards it was really the V6 engine that took the hit. They used to be everywhere, now most mainstream passenger cars (Accord, Camry, Sonata, etc.), just offer naturally aspirated 4's and turbo 4's.

Renault Alliance, four on the floor...circa 1986...no idea of horsepower...given it was a France engineered car, I'm guessing more like sheep power,

am I right?

(not a good car)

Sunbirds and Lebarons were cute convertibles in the 90s.
