We are thinking about getting one. Our girl is a 7.5 year old golden retriever but she's a bigger girl and had some health issues she might make it to 10. I can't decide if we should adopt a golden or get a puppy. I like shih Tzu, king Charles spaniels, and samoyeds too. I don't really want to have a dog for 15 years and I don't want to walk for an hour+ anymore so I think the samoyeds are out. Anybody have any advice or stories to share?

Rescue a greyhound. They’re already trained and are low key dogs that really don’t need much attention.

Black mouth curs are great dogs if you can spot one. The rescues generally won't label them as such (they usually call them a lab/shepherd mix). Google them to see what they look like

Thought about getting one instead of the GR. I didn't do it as a first time dog owner because they can be so protective. They are so pretty.

He was laying at my feet when my daughter opens the bathroom door and shuts it. When she was done, she didn’t close the door. He knew it. He calmly got up and went in, pulled the toilet paper off the holder and was chewing it up within 15 seconds.

What is the max size you want?

Sounds like you want something that only needs a little exercise

Is long fur or allergies an issue?

Is your current dog tolerant of other animals?

A lot of times the shelters have exactly what you are looking for and a lot are already at least partially trained.

My dog is about at mid life now and had a discussion with my wife about getting another one day. She is not a dog person but
really fell in love with my Boxer. She wants something smaller. I want a Great Dane. Good luck with the search.

You might have a difficult time going the rescue/adoption route for a golden, since there's such high demand. Likely, you'll find mixes that don't really look anything like a Golden, or it will have some behavioral challenges (doesn't get along with other dogs, afraid/nervous around people). At least that's what I've noticed from lazily searching off and on since my golden passed away a couple years ago.

I also had a shiba inu mix. She was adorable, but yeah very strong willed and had a huge prey drive.

I'd say narrow it down to a handful of breeds you would like and browse Petfinder, see what's out there. As T-Bone said, if you go through a rescue the dog will likely be fairly well trained.

T-Bone, our Great Dane has been great. She was running loose for 6 months before she was caught. She's barked once in 10 months because our Great Pyr was playing too rough. Eats, goes outside to the bathroom and comes in and lays on a bed/couch. That's it.

Get a rescue. Whatever breed you want.

Yeah, my wife is just not going to go for it. I have a small Boxer at 55 lbs and even that is pushing it size wise for her. We live in a small 1200
square foot house so I know she is not going to want to share her space with a 100 lb animal. Probably just continue to admire them from afar.

Not ignoring what you said Spaulding but we are trying very hard to replace the dogs we had that recently died. We still have a 10 year old lab and figure when he goes it is going to be time for travel and many other things a dog puts some more effort on. Not sure the age of your kids but something maybe to give a minute of consideration to.

Had to put down the 15 yr old Lhasa mutt we got from the pound in 03. Didn't want another dog until my son brought his goofy Rottweiler home last year. Damn dog assumes that her sleeping spot is wherever my usual spots are. I couldn't begin to control her on the leash if she had other thoughts. But as it appears that my sons has secured meaningful employment in Missourah, she won't be coming back as often as I'd like. And I'm thinking about grabbing a little(110-20 lb) Doberman next summer.

I'm always off as my friends always had giant Dobermans about that size. A 75-95 lb one would be even better as I have dog exclusive access to a fenced 1/3rd acre lot every day possible. And enough people around who could help socialize him. And be great home protection/company.

Yeah, that's about their size, and it's a good-sized dog. I like the 70 - 90 lb range. Big enough to look/sound intimidating, small enough that they're not gigantic.
