Hey look tobacco and marijuana users, the government hates drinkers too! Your information campaign of "Alcohol is worse than weed!" has succeeded!

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/14/18250824-ntsb-recommends-lowering-blood-alcohol-level-that-constitutes-drunk-driving?lite

I'm conflicted on this. While I do think it will make things safer, I also think it's going to be used to arrest people who really are not doing anything else wrong with safety checkpoints and standard stops. I really wish they'd do something where .05 is only punishable if you are showing signs of impairment while driving.

The good news for the drunk drivers of the board is that the last time it took about 20 years for the new laws to go nationwide, and by then Google will be driving your car for you.

I'm all for at least trying to make the roads safer, but I can't disagree with this;
Quote:
"This recommendation is ludicrous," said Sarah Longwell, managing director of American Beverage Institute. "Moving from 0.08 to 0.05 would criminalize perfectly responsible behavior.

"Further restricting the moderate consumption of alcohol by responsible adults prior to driving does nothing to stop hardcore drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel."

1 glass of wine or 1 dark beer (even a Guinness) would probably put a lot of people over .05

How will much of this board get to work if this passes?

Yeah, not sure this is gonna make a huge difference in drunk driving. Just revenue.

I mean, Drunk Driver is driving drunk. That's it. He likes it and you arent taking his keys.

You should be thrown in the slammer for driving tired. More dangerous.

Have to raise revenue somehow. Red Light Cameras aren't pulling in the money they used to.

You can also forget driving to work the next morning if you got lit up at home watching monday night football late the night before. For a average person that consumed 12 beers partying hard from 8-12 they could have a .05 at 6 the next morning.

The lady in the article is correct as far as I see. I haven't seen specific stats but would tend to lean in the direction that most sever DUI crashes are .18 and higher range from true drunks. And a stone cold alcoholic is driving with or without the license and blows a .05 when he wakes up and probably .12 all damn day.

If you go this far might as well put the Mark Grace breath thing in all cars and no one drives at all after alcohol.

Unfortunately this is true. Drunks don't give a fuck. They're gonna drive regardless of what the legal limit is. Lowering the legal limit is punishing the people who do drink responsibly. They've made it too cut and dried. Pull someone over, smell booze, breathalyze them. They've taken the discretion away from the cops. I'm all for safer roads, and I don't want drunks on the road, but this approach isn't going to work.

They call those examples a flash alcohol level or something. Waiting a short amount of time like 10 minutes and its gone. That is why cops shouldn't test you until they observed you for some time with no gum, drink etc. This gums like Dentyne Ice or whatever will put you over the limit in a minute after you start chewing.

If we really don't want drunk driving, why not make Intoxilock mandatory in ever vehicle? Problem solved. But then the voracious governments would need to find a new revenue stream.

This. If they are really concerned about safety, this is the solution. They did it with seat belts. They did it with air bags. Do it with Intoxilock. Drunk driving will be a thing of the past.

only if they had more than 2 of those. 1 shot, 1 glass of wine, 1 beer all equal .025. it takes one hour to remove that .025 level from your system without drinking more alcohol.

the more you know...

Yep two drinks during a one hour dinner or happy hour stop and you're screwed. They won't go complete interlock though. Lobbyists and so on including DUI revenues. Follow the money.

technically even now you can be processed for a DUI even with a BAC under .08, as long as the cops can prove you're "under the influence". the BAC won't matter.

and just for clarification, the 1 shot, 1 beer, 1 glass of wine thing is on average. obviously 1 triple IPA is going to have a higher % of alcohol than a bud light. but basically that's the simple math of it.

That sucks big time.
Why do they keep adding to the cost of vehicles like this?
We had to pay an extra $1000 for those goddamn low tire warning deals, and fixing them is like $300 a shot if they break. Which they DO.
We now have mandatry backup cameras on vehicles (I think starting in like 2015 or something). WHY?
This hurts the poor. They won't be able to afford a decent new vehicle because of the soon to be tens of thousands of dollars of useless "safety" contraptions that each car has to have.
Even anti lock brakes are kinda unnecessary. Don't drive too close. Watch your road surfaces. Most of my first cars didn't have anti lock brakes and I never slid into anything.
I don't know for sure but I think that the fuckin LSD's are mandatory. And they suck. Always disabled the one in my 'stang because if you slipped your rears even a LITTLE bit they'd cut engine power, something dangerous when pulling onto main thourofares like turning from Case road onto Route 12. A little slip in the gravel with oncoming traffic and suddenly I got no damn power. Bullshit.

Sorry I didn't emoticon the sarcasm. I think it's fine where it is. More jut annoyed at the "oohhhh it's for safety" when a true solution to the problem is something they won't do.

I'm with you on both traction control and Anti lock brakes. Traction control actually makes it harder for me during the winter cause I was taught how to drive in that crap. I turn it off most of the time.
