To dovetail off FF's rightful scolding of the dopes in this thread, I'm not seeing much consideration of the idea that the gun angle or the religion angle or whatever else is all easily-digested but ultimately uninformative as to the underlying cause of the problem, which I reckon finds its roots in some untreated mental illness(es) ... which isn't terribly sexy to discuss in a public forum like this or on other idiot platforms like Twitter or Facebook ... which is why that problem doesn't get addressed by MANY, I suppose.

I'm with you Don. This is an underlying issue, but what environmental factors led to him to this point? His ex wife issued a statement saying he was very abusive and mentally unstable. She also said her parents had to basically rescue her when he wasn't there. She also said at that time he wasn't religious. I'm not sure the time this marriage situation took place, but it very well could have been a trigger. Isis fanboy ism could have been the release he was looking for. This is just thinking out loud, and I'm not trying to arm chair diagnose this guy.

I also think this isn't indicative of every Muslim, but it just doesn't look good. I'm also aware of the U.S. involvement assisting in the inflaming and indirectly giving rise to certain sects of extremists. I feel like the perceptive bridge is burning between our two cultures, especially in this country. I can't speak for Europeans, but they do seem more accepting of Islam. IMO this country is much more wary.

Idk, I don't see any of this getting better regardless of who the next president is. The Middle East seems far more unmanageable than it ever has in my 33 years, and this is without mentioning the faltering U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia.

To be serious, though... this happens after every mass shooting. People freak the fuck out and say "WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY?!"

The reality is that if it were my, or someone here's, family, we would be emotionally wrecked and want to kill the entire Muslim population. But that's an emotional reaction and one that should not dictate public policy.

I'd be curious to see stats on how much we spend to "eliminate terrorism" and the amount of money we spend to "end cancer", per death.

To be clear, I'm willing to say that fundamentalist Islam is a problem. I'm just not willing to say that it's even top 5 or maybe even 10 of problems we actually face as a society.
